| 1 | | AN ACT concerning education.
|
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

| 4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
| 5 | | 27-3.10 as follows: |
| 6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-3.10 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 27-3.10. Elementary school civics course of study. In |
| 8 | | addition to the instruction required to be provided under |
| 9 | | Section 27-3 of this Code, every public elementary school shall |
| 10 | | include in its 6th, 7th, or 8th grade curriculum, beginning |
| 11 | | with the 2018-2019 school year, at least one semester of civics |
| 12 | | education, which shall help young people acquire and learn to |
| 13 | | use the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that will prepare them |
| 14 | | to be competent and responsible citizens throughout their |
| 15 | | lives. Civics education course content shall focus on |
| 16 | | government institutions, the discussion of current and |
| 17 | | societal issues, service learning, and simulations of the |
| 18 | | democratic process. Civics education in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade |
| 19 | | shall be in accordance with Illinois Learning Standards for |
| 20 | | social science. Additionally, school districts may consult |
| 21 | | with civics education stakeholders, deemed appropriate by the |
| 22 | | State Board of Education, with regards to civics education |
| 23 | | curriculum for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. School districts may |
