HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, It is important that we remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our State and nation; and

WHEREAS, Corporal Richard Lawrence Daugherty was born in Belleville, Illinois to Elvira and Charles Daugherty on February 3, 1949; he graduated from Waterloo Public High School in the spring of 1967; and

WHEREAS, Corporal Daugherty enlisted in the United States Army on November 17, 1967; he completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and then finished Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana; and

WHEREAS, On May 1, 1968, Corporal Daugherty began his first tour of duty in Vietnam; while in the service, he received Expert Shooting Medals for machine guns and rifles, a Gold National Defense Medal, and the Purple Heart; and

WHEREAS, On August 26, 1968, Corporal Richard Lawrence Daugherty died in the line of duty from injuries sustained during a mortar attack; he was the first casualty from Waterloo, Illinois and the second casualty from Monroe County during the Vietnam War; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of Illinois Route 3 from Highway 156 to Vanderbrook Drive as the "Corporal Richard Lawrence Daugherty Memorial Highway"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State and Federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs giving notice to the name "Corporal Richard Lawrence Daugherty Memorial Highway"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to the family of Corporal Richard Daugherty and the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
