HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue in 
3Pittsburgh shocked the world; and
  
 
4    WHEREAS, A peaceful sabbath service turned into a massacre 
5of Jewish life; families were gathered for weekly Shabbat 
6prayer and to
welcome a child into the Jewish community when an 
7armed intruder opened fire inside the synagogue with an assault 
8rifle, slaughtering 11 Jewish
congregants and wounding six 
9brave law enforcement officers; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, The Jewish Caucus of the Illinois Legislature 
11condemns this anti-Semitic act and will continue to fight 
12against the hatred and violence directed at their community; 
13and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, This is not only a Jewish issue; it also affects 
15the African-American, Latino, LGBTQ, Muslim, and immigrant

16communities, and everyone who has been the  victim of white 
17nationalist violence; and
  
 
  
18    WHEREAS, Children must know that evil begets evil, and that 
19violence begets violence; therefore, be it
  
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

1HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE 
2CONCURRING HEREIN, that we stand in solidarity with the Jewish 
3community in Pittsburgh, and we condemn these acts of terror, 
4whether they take place in a house of worship in Pittsburgh, a 
5parking lot in Kentucky, a nightclub, a
schoolyard, or a 
6playground; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That we must seek to
build a safe and inclusive 
8community, we must reject terrorism in all its forms, and we 
9must pass laws to protect our communities from
violence and 
10fear; and be it further
  
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
12presented to the Tree of Life Synagogue as a symbol of our 
13solidarity.
