2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the Delta Sigma Theta |
4 | | Sorority as they visit the Illinois State Capitol for Delta |
5 | | Days on March 28, 2017; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, Delta Sigma Theta has focused |
7 | | on five areas: economic development, educational development, |
8 | | international
awareness and involvement, physical and mental |
9 | | Health, and political awareness and involvement; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, In March 1913, six weeks after its founding, Delta |
11 | | Sigma Theta took part in its first action - marching in the |
12 | | women's suffrage parade in Washington, D.C.; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, In 1989, the National Social Action Commission |
14 | | instituted Delta Days in the nation's capital, an
annual |
15 | | legislative conference to increase members' involvement in the |
16 | | national public policymaking
process; the annual conference |
17 | | includes legislative briefings, issue forums, and advocacy |
18 | | skills
development; featured speakers include key |
19 | | policymakers, members of the United States Congress,
|
20 | | Congressional staff members, and national issues experts; |
21 | | events are also held on the regional,
State, and local levels; |
22 | | and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Delta Days activities include briefings on |
2 | | legislative issues which impact the African-American
|
3 | | community; skill development sessions such as "How to Lobby |
4 | | Effectively", "Understanding the Role
of Congressional |
5 | | Staffers", and "How to Monitor and Track Legislation"; it also |
6 | | includes legislative visits to members
of Congress; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta has 24 chapters in the State of |
8 | | Illinois, which is part of the Mighty Midwest Region, comprised |
9 | | of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, |
10 | | Wisconsin, and West Virginia; it has 3,800 members in Illinois; |
11 | | and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Today, the goals of Delta Sigma Theta are voter |
13 | | registration and voter education programs, combating voter |
14 | | suppression, full restoration of voting rights for individuals |
15 | | who have paid their debt to society (ex-offenders), affordable |
16 | | health care and access to quality health care, financial |
17 | | literacy and economic empowerment, support for historically |
18 | | African American colleges and universities, political |
19 | | awareness and involvement, gender equality, and ending racial |
20 | | profiling; therefore, be it
