2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to recognize former Illinois State | ||||||
4 | Senator Adlai E. III and Nancy Stevenson; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III is the Chairman of the Adlai | ||||||
6 | Stevenson Center on Democracy, which he co-founded in 2008 in | ||||||
7 | honor of former Illinois Governor Adlai E. Stevenson II; its | ||||||
8 | mission is to address challenges to democratic systems of | ||||||
9 | government and conceive practical ways of addressing them; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III is the Chairman of the SC&M | ||||||
11 | Investment Company; he served in the United States Marine Corps | ||||||
12 | during the Korean War; he is a former Illinois
Supreme Court | ||||||
13 | Justice Clerk, and a former partner in the law firm of Mayer, | ||||||
14 | Brown; he served in the Illinois House of
Representatives from | ||||||
15 | 1965 to 1967 and as Illinois State Treasurer from 1967 to 1970; | ||||||
16 | in 1970, he was elected to the United States Senate and
| ||||||
17 | re-elected in 1974; he retired from the U.S. Senate in 1981 and | ||||||
18 | was the Democratic candidate for Governor of
Illinois in 1982 | ||||||
19 | and 1986; and | ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III has spent much of his private | ||||||
21 | life in East Asian public policy and business related venues; | ||||||
22 | he has
traveled and worked in more than 80 countries, and |

1 | served on many boards and commissions; his honors include
the | ||||||
2 | Order of the Sacred Treasure with Gold and Silver Star from the | ||||||
3 | government of Japan and Honorary Professor
of Renmin University | ||||||
4 | in China; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Adlai Stevenson III authored "The Black Book", | ||||||
6 | about American politics and history as his family knew it over | ||||||
7 | five
generations; he is a graduate of Harvard College and | ||||||
8 | Harvard Law School; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, Nancy Stevenson is President of the Adlai | ||||||
10 | Stevenson Center on Democracy; she is Trustee Emerita at the
| ||||||
11 | University of Chicago, and the former Chair of the Illinois | ||||||
12 | Humanities Council and Federation of State Humanities | ||||||
13 | Councils; she served as the CEO for Voices for Illinois | ||||||
14 | Children; she holds a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College, a | ||||||
15 | Master of Arts from American University, and Master of Fine | ||||||
16 | Arts from Vermont College (now the
Vermont College of Fine | ||||||
17 | Arts); and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, In 2017, Adlai and Nancy Stevenson will receive | ||||||
19 | the "Mikva Legacy Award for Truth & Justice" from the Illinois | ||||||
20 | Campaign for Political Reform; they live on their farm in | ||||||
21 | northwest Illinois and have four children; therefore, be it
| ||||||
22 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |

1 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
2 | recognize former Illinois State Senator Adlai E. III and Nancy | ||||||
3 | Stevenson and thank them for their community involvement and | ||||||
4 | their work for the advancement of democratic ideals of | ||||||
5 | government; and be it further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to Adlai and Nancy Stevenson.
