2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Reverend
Dr. L. |
4 | | Bernard Jakes on the 15th anniversary of his role as |
5 | | pastor/teacher at West Point
Missionary Baptist Church in |
6 | | Chicago; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes has dedicated his life to serving his
|
8 | | community as a teacher, leader, and advocate; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes began his education at the Nicholas |
10 | | Copernicus Elementary School and the Marie
Sklodowska Curie |
11 | | Metropolitan High School for the Performing and Techical Arts; |
12 | | he furthered his education
with a Bachelor of Arts from |
13 | | Elmhurst College, a Master of Arts from the Garrett Evangelical
|
14 | | Theological Seminary at Northwestern University, and a Doctor |
15 | | of Ministry from the United Theological Seminary; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes has witnessed and worked to bring about |
17 | | numerous spiritual, financial, and
administrative successes |
18 | | over his past 15 years as a leader at West Point Missionary |
19 | | Baptist
Church; and |
20 | | WHEREAS, The service and ministry of Dr. Jakes expands far |
21 | | beyond the walls of the church and into
the streets of his |

2 | | WHEREAS, The service of Dr. Jakes includes the creation of |
3 | | the Operation H.O.P.E. Food and Clothing
Pantry in response to |
4 | | the needs of his neighbors, which serves over 20,000 people |
5 | | annually; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes envisioned the creation of the Domestic |
7 | | Violence and Advocacy Ministry,
where men, women, and children |
8 | | who experience physical and emotional violence receive
|
9 | | support, resources, and love from their faith family at West |
10 | | Point Missionary Baptist Church; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jakes utilizes his voice as a local pastor to |
12 | | speak to policymakers as well as
community members the truth as |
13 | | it relates to social justice and accountability; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, The passion and commitment of Dr. Jakes to bring |
15 | | about social justice has led him to advise local,
State, and |
16 | | federal politicians on issues vital to his faith community |
17 | | including sensible gun laws,
increasing the minimum wage, and |
18 | | education funding reform; therefore, be it

19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
20 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
21 | | congratulate the Reverend
