HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, President Barack H. Obama served as the 44th
3President of the United States of America from January 20, 2009
4to January 20, 2017; he was the first African American elected
5to the American Presidency, and the first president born out of
6the continental United States; and
 
7    WHEREAS, President Obama represented the 13th Senate
8District in the Illinois State Senate in Springfield from 1997
9to 2004; and
 
10    WHEREAS, President Obama announced his candidacy for
11President of the United States on February 10, 2007 on the
12steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, the location
13where in 1858 President Abraham Lincoln delivered his "House
14Divided" speech; and
 
15    WHEREAS, President Obama addressed a joint session of the
16Illinois General Assembly on February 10, 2016 in a speech in
17which he called upon all Americans to never stop striving to
18make the United States a more perfect union; and
 
19    WHEREAS, President Obama believed that working families
20are the core of what makes America special and showed a deep
21understanding of the challenges that they faced; his policies

1always reflected that belief; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The presidency of Barack Obama was historic, from
3his remarkable victory to his final days in office, and he
4brought great pride to Illinois, especially Springfield, where
5it all began; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8recognize President Barack Obama launching his historic 2008
9presidential campaign with a speech at the Old State Capitol
10and his momentous speech before the Illinois General Assembly
11during his final year in office in 2016.
