2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate William "Bill" Yoshino on | ||||||
4 | 38 years of service as the Midwest Regional Director of the | ||||||
5 | Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), a position he | ||||||
6 | accepted in 1978; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, In his work with the JACL, Bill assisted in | ||||||
8 | organizing outreach to the members of Congress in the Midwest | ||||||
9 | for legislation to establish the Commission on Wartime | ||||||
10 | Relocation and Internment of Civilians, as well as for the | ||||||
11 | Civil Liberties Act of 1988; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, In the 1990s, Bill worked with the Office of | ||||||
13 | Redress Administration to assist in contacting individuals who | ||||||
14 | were eligible to receive redress payments; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Bill is a respected leader in JACL's effort to | ||||||
16 | combat anti-Asian sentiment through stronger hate crime | ||||||
17 | legislation and anti-defamation initiatives; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Bill testified before the United States Senate on | ||||||
19 | the Hate Crimes Statistics Act of 1988, has produced a | ||||||
20 | semi-annual newsletter on hate crimes and hate incidents, and | ||||||
21 | has conducted hate crime workshops at college conferences; and

1 | WHEREAS, Bill has represented the Asian American community | ||||||
2 | on the Illinois Asian American Advisory Council to the | ||||||
3 | Governor, the Chicago Asian American Advisory Committee, the | ||||||
4 | Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and the Illinois | ||||||
5 | Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Bill supported the growth of young leaders by | ||||||
7 | organizing teacher training workshops through grants from the | ||||||
8 | National Park Service and the National Endowment for the | ||||||
9 | Humanities, revising and updating the JACL curriculum guide, | ||||||
10 | and producing educational materials on Japanese American | ||||||
11 | internment and Asian Pacific Islander history; he also | ||||||
12 | established the JACL Collegiate Washington, D.C. Leadership | ||||||
13 | Program and has provided fellowship opportunities to college | ||||||
14 | graduates; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Bill has ensured the continued success of the | ||||||
16 | Japanese American Citizens League through his dedicated work to | ||||||
17 | develop young leaders; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Bill's commitment to honor and address history and | ||||||
19 | his work to educate the public on hate crimes to prevent future | ||||||
20 | injustices has made a major impact on generations of citizens; | ||||||
21 | therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
2 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
3 | congratulate William "Bill" Yoshino on 38 years of service as | ||||||
4 | the Midwest Regional Director of the Japanese American Citizens | ||||||
5 | League, and we wish him the best in all of his future | ||||||
6 | endeavors; and be it further

7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
8 | presented to William Yoshino as an expression of our esteem and | ||||||
9 | respect.
