2 | WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention | ||||||
3 | report that one in three women and one in four men will
| ||||||
4 | experience some form of physical violence by an intimate | ||||||
5 | partner in their lifetime; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Domestic abuse is a repetitive pattern of | ||||||
7 | behaviors to maintain power and control over an
intimate | ||||||
8 | partner; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, More than three million children witness domestic | ||||||
10 | violence in their homes each year; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, An estimated one-half of women in abusive | ||||||
12 | relationships in the United States are physically injured by
| ||||||
13 | their partner; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Domestic violence costs more than $37 billion a | ||||||
15 | year in law enforcement involvement, legal
assistance, medical | ||||||
16 | and mental health treatment, and lost employee productivity; | ||||||
17 | and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Organizations such as the National Domestic | ||||||
19 | Violence Hotline and the National Coalition
Against Domestic | ||||||
20 | Violence have worked to educate, counsel, and help communities |

1 | affected by
domestic violence; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from | ||||||
3 | the "Day of Unity" held in October of
1981, and was conceived | ||||||
4 | by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Since 1989, October has been designated as | ||||||
6 | National Domestic Violence Month; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, With violence increasing in our schools, on our | ||||||
8 | streets, and in our homes, ending it should be
a top priority | ||||||
9 | for everyone; therefore, be it
| ||||||
10 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
11 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
12 | recognize National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in | ||||||
13 | October of 2018 and support and commend the efforts of those | ||||||
14 | people and organizations who work tirelessly to help victims | ||||||
15 | break free of the devastating effects of domestic abuse and | ||||||
16 | work to ameliorate this scourge on society, thereby creating | ||||||
17 | safer communities for all.
