1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION

2 | | WHEREAS, 105 ILCS 5/27-20.4 requires that every public |
3 | | elementary school and high school shall include in its |
4 | | curriculum a unit of instruction studying the events of Black |
5 | | History, including the history of the African slave trade, |
6 | | slavery in America, and the vestiges of slavery in this |
7 | | country; these events shall include not only the contributions |
8 | | made by individual African-Americans in government and in the |
9 | | arts, humanities and sciences to the economic, cultural and |
10 | | political development of the United States and Africa, but also |
11 | | the socio-economic struggle which African-Americans |
12 | | experienced collectively in striving to achieve fair and equal |
13 | | treatment under the laws of this nation; the studying of this |
14 | | material shall constitute an affirmation by students of their |
15 | | commitment to respect the dignity of all races and peoples and |
16 | | to forever eschew every form of discrimination in their lives |
17 | | and careers; therefore, be it

18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
19 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that the |
20 | | Illinois State Board of Education is directed to conduct an |
21 | | audit of every Illinois school district's history curriculum |
22 | | from K-12 to review the following: (1) Does the district's |
23 | | curricular material no matter the format contain a current unit |
24 | | on African American history, (2) At what grade school level |
