2 | WHEREAS, John E. McGovern III, a native of Illinois born in | ||||||
3 | Chicago, displayed from his earliest years a
high level of | ||||||
4 | intelligence and an orientation towards politics and history; | ||||||
5 | he attended Lake Forest
Country Day School, boarded at | ||||||
6 | Deerfield Academy, and was admitted to Princeton University; | ||||||
7 | and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, As a Princeton student in history, John McGovern | ||||||
9 | passed through bicker into the Ivy Club, and also
joined Sigma | ||||||
10 | Alpha Epsilon; after graduating with honors in history and | ||||||
11 | American Studies, he attended
the Pritzker School of Law at | ||||||
12 | Northwestern University, earning a J.D. degree; he passed the | ||||||
13 | bar
exam and was admitted to the Illinois bar; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Continuing his interest in politics, John | ||||||
15 | McGovern took positions as press secretary with the Illinois | ||||||
16 | Republican Party from 1994 to 1998 and as campaign manager for
| ||||||
17 | then-U.S. Representative Mark Kirk in 2000; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, As part of his continued professional | ||||||
19 | advancement, John McGovern affiliated himself with
the Office | ||||||
20 | of the U.S. Speaker of the House; he combined his service as a | ||||||
21 | high-level congressional
aide with the development of | ||||||
22 | increasing dexterity in U.S. politics as the executive director |

Our Majority PAC; and | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Continuing his work on Capitol Hill, John McGovern | ||||||
3 | was a senior advisor to U.S.
Representative Bob Dold from 2010 | ||||||
4 | through 2012; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, As a senior political strategist, John McGovern | ||||||
6 | successfully turned to private equity; he
served for | ||||||
7 | approximately seven years at Resolute Consulting LLC, and as a | ||||||
8 | principal in the Thurston Group as a
manager of strategic | ||||||
9 | initiatives; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, As a civic leader, John McGovern was asked by his | ||||||
11 | friends and acquaintances to take on a variety of additional | ||||||
12 | responsibilities; he served on the board of directors of the | ||||||
13 | Boys and Girls Clubs
of Chicago and, at the time of his death, | ||||||
14 | was serving as vice president of the Auxiliary Board of the
Art | ||||||
15 | Institute of Chicago; he served on many other boards and | ||||||
16 | advisory councils, including panels that
provide leadership | ||||||
17 | and financial backing for the Field Museum and the Rush Medical | ||||||
18 | Center; and | ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, In news that shocked and saddened those close to | ||||||
20 | him, John McGovern died on Friday,
July 13, 2018, at the age of | ||||||
21 | only 48; and

1 | WHEREAS, John McGovern leaves behind his wife of seven | ||||||
2 | years, Wentworth Caldwell McGovern; his
sons, Caldwell Armour | ||||||
3 | McGovern and Watson Greeley McGovern; and many other
family | ||||||
4 | members and friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
6 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
7 | feel a sense of
sadness and loss at John McGovern's death, and | ||||||
8 | we mourn his passing; and be it further
| ||||||
9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
10 | presented to his widow, Wentworth Caldwell
McGovern, as a | ||||||
11 | symbol of our sadness and sense of loss.
