SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago (JSMC) 
3was founded in 1970 and has a membership of approximately 1,900 
4families, the largest membership representation of Jain 
5Centers in North America; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, In 1992, JSMC built the first significant Jain 
7Temple in North America in Bartlett in order to provide a

8temple for religious services and a community center for the 
9social, cultural, and educational needs of the Jain
community; 
10and
  
 
11    WHEREAS, The mission of JSMC is to offer a trustworthy and 
12structured ground for projecting a common voice of all
Jains, 
13to promote principles of the Jain religion, to provide Jain 
14education to the community, and to celebrate Jain
social and 
15cultural events in a manner that is compassionate, vibrant, and 
16dynamic to all; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, JSMC is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its 
18temple, and the idol of Bhagawan Mahavir Swami is the principal 
19deity in the sanctum of the temple; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, After renunciation at the age of 30, Bhagawan 
21Mahavir Swami undertook many severe austerities and reinforced

1them by living and teaching the Jain  values of non-violence, 
2compassion, non-possessiveness, pluralism, and supreme truth; 
3and
  
 
4    WHEREAS, JSMC honors Bhagawan Mahavir Swami and his Jain 
5teachings, which have been passed down from generation to 
6generation; therefore, be it
  
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL 
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 
9CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate Illinois Route 59 as it 
10travels between Lake Street (US 20) and Baytree Drive as 
11"Mahavir Swami Road"; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation 
13is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with

14State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs

15giving notice of the name "Mahavir Swami Road"; and be it 
16further
  
 
17    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 
18presented to the Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago and the 
19Secretary of Transportation.
