2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Paul C. Schreckenberger, Ph.D. of River | ||||||
4 | Forest, who passed away on November 29, 2016, at the age of 69; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Dr. Schreckenberger was raised in Buffalo, New | ||||||
7 | York; he earned his bachelor's degree in medical laboratory | ||||||
8 | science from
the State University of New York; he graduated | ||||||
9 | from the University of Minnesota with a master's
degree in the | ||||||
10 | same field in 1974; he served seven years in the United States | ||||||
11 | Army National Guard; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Schreckenberger moved to Chicago to become an | ||||||
13 | assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, | ||||||
14 | teaching
clinical microbiology and helping to train laboratory | ||||||
15 | technicians; he later became Associate Director of Clinical | ||||||
16 | Laboratories at the University of Illinois Hospital; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, After completing work on a Doctorate in Pathology | ||||||
18 | with a focus on microbiology in 1989, Dr. Schreckenberger | ||||||
19 | became the Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at | ||||||
20 | Loyola University Medical Center and a professor of Pathology | ||||||
21 | at the Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood; he was | ||||||
22 | internationally recognized as an expert in the field of |

1 | microbiology and lectured at conferences around the world; and
| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, Dr. Schreckenberger was named Teacher of the Year | ||||||
3 | by pathology residents three times while at the Loyola | ||||||
4 | University Medical Center; he was elected to the American | ||||||
5 | Academy of Microbiology in 2008, and in 2010, he received the | ||||||
6 | Pasteur Award from the Illinois Society for Microbiology; and | ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Schreckenberger was one of the lead authors of | ||||||
8 | the microbiology textbook "Koneman's Color Atlas and Textbook | ||||||
9 | of Diagnostic
Microbiology"; he wrote a number of chapters for | ||||||
10 | other books and contributed to 85 journal
publications and 259 | ||||||
11 | published abstracts or posters; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Schreckenberger kept spirits high in the | ||||||
13 | department with festivities such as a costume contest or a | ||||||
14 | themed lunch with hot dogs when the Chicago Cubs were in the | ||||||
15 | World Series; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Schreckenberger was preceded in death by his | ||||||
17 | parents, Charles and Dorothy Schreckenberger, and his | ||||||
18 | children, Laura and Scott; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Dr. Schreckenberger was the husband of Ann (Dye); | ||||||
20 | the father of Adam; the brother of Ann Marie (Jean Bernard) | ||||||
21 | Roeder, Mary Kathryn (Arthur) Hart, Thomas (Claudine), Denise |

1 | (Darryl) Anello, and Charles "Chas" (Kimberly) | ||||||
2 | Schreckenberger; the brother-in-law of Cindy (Jerry) Redmond | ||||||
3 | and Sharon (the late Nelson) Dye; and uncle of many; therefore, | ||||||
4 | be it

5 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
6 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
7 | Paul C. Schreckenberger, Ph.D., and extend our sincere | ||||||
8 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
9 | him; and be it further

10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
11 | presented to the family of Dr. Schreckenberger as an expression | ||||||
12 | of our deepest sympathy.
