2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Rolyn W. "Ron" Olson of Rock Island, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on January 31, 2017; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson was born in Monmouth to Samuel and | ||||||
6 | Hattie Harris Olson on June 24, 1928; he grew up on a farm | ||||||
7 | between Joy and New Boston and attended Joy High School, | ||||||
8 | graduating in 1946; as a young man, he worked on his parents' | ||||||
9 | and grandparents' farms; during the Korean War, he served with | ||||||
10 | the United States Navy Seabees, constructing the Subic Bay | ||||||
11 | Naval Base in the South Pacific Theater; he married Mary | ||||||
12 | Gustafson on April 10, 1949; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson worked as a millwright and welder on | ||||||
14 | construction jobs all over the Midwest; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, After retiring in 1990, Rolyn Olson enjoyed | ||||||
16 | restoring and showing antique tractors and won numerous | ||||||
17 | trophies; he spent many hours working in his shop at home; he | ||||||
18 | was very proud of his Swedish heritage and enjoyed studying the | ||||||
19 | family genealogy; he was a member of the International | ||||||
20 | Harvester Collectors Club, the Midwest Old Threshers, and the | ||||||
21 | Edwards River Antique Engine Club; and

1 | WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson was a member of the Seabee Reserves, | ||||||
2 | the Navy Seabee Veterans of America, the American Legion, the | ||||||
3 | Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Rifle Association, and | ||||||
4 | the Vikings; he was a 60-plus-year member of Millwright Local | ||||||
5 | Union No. 2158; he served his union as Board Member, Treasurer, | ||||||
6 | Negotiator, and Apprentice Instructor; in 1964, he was on the | ||||||
7 | committee negotiating the first insurance and pension benefits | ||||||
8 | for Local 2158; he was also Treasurer of the Millwright | ||||||
9 | Retirees Club; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Rolyn Olson is survived by his wife of 67 years, | ||||||
11 | Mary; his son, David (Heidi) Olson; his daughter, Margaret | ||||||
12 | Rosanne Moreland; five grandchildren; and three | ||||||
13 | great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
| ||||||
14 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
15 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
16 | Rolyn W. "Ron" Olson, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
17 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
18 | further

19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the family of Rolyn Olson as an expression of our | ||||||
21 | deepest sympathy.
