2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Ernst Chester Bone, M.D. of Jacksonville, |
4 | | who passed away on March 15, 2017 at the age of 102; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone was born on a farm near Prairie City to |
6 | | Gratia Hope (Hyde) and Chester David Bone on March 3, 1915; he |
7 | | received his primary and secondary education in the Prairie |
8 | | City School System and graduated from Illinois College in 1936 |
9 | | with a Bachelor of Arts; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone taught chemistry and physics at |
11 | | Petersburg Harris High School for two years and then returned |
12 | | to Jacksonville as Director of Admissions at Illinois College; |
13 | | during that time, he earned his Master of Arts in Education |
14 | | from the University of Illinois; and |
15 | | WHEREAS, In 1942, Dr. Bone enrolled in medical school; he |
16 | | earned his Bachelor of Science in Medicine in 1944 and his |
17 | | master's degree in 1946 from the University of Illinois School |
18 | | of Medicine while serving as a volunteer in the United States |
19 | | Navy V12 Program during World War II; he later served as a |
20 | | Naval physician during the Korean War while stationed in |
21 | | Bermuda; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone completed post-graduate training at the |
2 | | Illinois Research and Education Hospital, connected with the |
3 | | University of Illinois; he returned to Jacksonville and |
4 | | established his practice of clinical medicine and surgery on |
5 | | West State Street; in 1955, he co-founded the Bone-Scott Clinic |
6 | | on West State Street where no one was ever turned away and many |
7 | | appreciated receiving house calls; he also served for many |
8 | | years as Medical Director of Barton-Stone Nursing Home; in his |
9 | | spare time, he delivered over 4,500 babies; and |
10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone retired from clinical practice in 1989 |
11 | | but went on to serve over 25 years as a medical consultant for |
12 | | the State of Illinois Bureau of Disability Determination |
13 | | Services; he worked part-time until the age of 100; in |
14 | | addition, he served as medical consultant for the Illinois |
15 | | Department of Public Aid and as Associate Clinical Professor |
16 | | for the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine; and |
17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone was among a group of family physicians |
18 | | who founded the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP); he |
19 | | served as an officer for the ABFP's national board and |
20 | | represented family medicine on the American Board of Medical |
21 | | Specialties; multiple times he was President of the |
22 | | Morgan-Scott Medical Society, and was a member of the Illinois |
23 | | Medical Society, and the Illinois and American Academy of |
24 | | Physicians; he served as President of the Illinois State |

1 | | Academy of Family Practice and the American Academy of Family |
2 | | Practice; "Good Housekeeping" named him one of the nation's top |
3 | | 10 physicians; he received the Illinois State Family |
4 | | Practitioner of the Year Award and was recognized in the |
5 | | National Top Five Family Practitioners of the Year in 1980; and |
6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone was passionate about education; he served |
7 | | for nine years on the Jacksonville School District 117 Board of |
8 | | Directors and for over 25 years on the MacMurray College Board |
9 | | of Trustees; he served as President of the Illinois College |
10 | | Alumni Association and for 10 years as alumni representative on |
11 | | the Illinois College Board of Trustees; he was awarded an |
12 | | honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Illinois College in 1989 and |
13 | | an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree from MacMurray |
14 | | College in 1990; as team physician, he was elected to the |
15 | | Illinois College and MacMurray College athletic Halls of Fame; |
16 | | and |
17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone had a lifelong interest in farming and |
18 | | was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association; as a |
19 | | young man, he was involved in 4H and in 1968 he was named |
20 | | Illinois State 4H Alumnus of the Year; he received the Paul |
21 | | Harris Fellow Award from Rotary Club and was also named |
22 | | Jacksonville's Citizen of the Year and was inducted into the |
23 | | City of Jacksonville Hall of Fame; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone served multiple terms as an elder of |
2 | | State Street Presbyterian and First Presbyterian Churches in |
3 | | Jacksonville, and was a member of The Literary Union men's |
4 | | literary society; he enjoyed the theater and performed for |
5 | | decades in the Passavant Hospital Follies, and several Ken |
6 | | Bradbury productions, including "The Shadow of Giants"; he |
7 | | served as President of the Salvation Army Board of Directors |
8 | | and was Co-Chair of the Prairieland United Way campaign; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone was preceded in death by his parents; his |
10 | | sister, Mary Elizabeth Bone; his brothers, Maurice and James; |
11 | | his first wife, Eileen Kitts Bone; his close first cousin |
12 | | Gratia Hall Coultas; and his uncle, the Rev. John Hyde, a |
13 | | highly-regarded missionary known as Praying Hyde of India; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bone is survived by his wife, Louise K. Bone; |
15 | | his sons, Judge J. David (Patricia) Bone, Stephen Kitts |
16 | | (Patricia) Bone, and Timothy Robert Bone; his step-daughters, |
17 | | Jenny (Scott) Norris Peterson, and Kathryn (Christopher) |
18 | | Norris Kirt; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; |
19 | | therefore, be it

21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
22 | | Ernst Chester Bone, M.D., and extend our sincere condolences to |
23 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it |
