SENATE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, In 1973, the National Trust for Historic 
3Preservation established the month of May as National
Historic 
4Preservation Month in order to promote historic places for the 
5purpose of instilling national and
community pride, promoting 
6heritage tourism, and demonstrating the social, cultural, and 
7economic
benefits of historic preservation; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Historic preservation is an effective tool for 
9managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods,
fostering local 
10pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing 
11livability; and
  
 
12    WHEREAS, The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency 
13recognizes May as Historic Preservation Month and
highlights 
14local events throughout the State to recognize and promote the 
15historic cultural
resources of Illinois; and
  
 
16    WHEREAS, Historic Preservation Month increases awareness 
17of historically significant buildings,
structures, sites, and 
18places to Illinois residents and visitors alike; and
 
19    WHEREAS, It is important to celebrate the role of history 
20in our lives and the contributions made by
dedicated 
21individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the

1heritage that has shaped us as a
people; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, Historic Preservation Month can inspire 
3conversations and discussions in a community, uniting

4residents in a common and important cause to recognize, 
5preserve, and promote these places; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, Historic preservation efforts, especially the 
7rehabilitation of historic buildings and structures,
provide 
8new housing and business opportunities, revitalize 
9neighborhoods, stabilize and even increase
property values, 
10and create jobs; therefore, be it
  
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL 
12ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize
and hereby 
13proclaim May of 2017 as Historic Preservation Month in the 
14State of Illinois, and call upon its
residents and visitors to 
15participate in this special observance; and be it further
  
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
17presented to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.
