2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of David C. Shaul of Champaign, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on May 22, 2017; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, David Shaul was born in Rushville, Indiana to | ||||||
6 | Verrollton C. and Wilma Jane (Clifton) Shaul on July 16, 1941; | ||||||
7 | he graduated from Central High School in Champaign in 1959, | ||||||
8 | where hosted a weekly radio show on WDWS-WHMS; he graduated | ||||||
9 | from the University of Illinois with a degree in broadcast | ||||||
10 | journalism in 1963 and married Annilee L. Armstrong in Decatur | ||||||
11 | on June 5, 1965; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, David Shaul began a 37-year career with WCIA-TV as | ||||||
13 | a news anchor, producer, and director of downstate Illinois' | ||||||
14 | largest broadcast news department; he returned to WDWS-WHMS as | ||||||
15 | a daytime news anchor in September of 2000; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, David Shaul was honored with an Associated Press | ||||||
17 | Mark Twain Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 and a lifetime | ||||||
18 | achievement Emmy from the Mid-America Chapter of the National | ||||||
19 | Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2011; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, David Shaul was inducted into the Eastern Illinois | ||||||
21 | University Journalism Hall of Fame and was designated a |

1 | lifetime member of the Illinois News Broadcasters Association; | ||||||
2 | and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, During Dave Shaul's time at WDWS-WHMS, he was part | ||||||
4 | of three first-place SilverDome awards from the Illinois | ||||||
5 | Broadcast Association; while at WCIA, the news department won | ||||||
6 | numerous awards; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, David Shaul was a fan of the University of | ||||||
8 | Illinois Fighting Illini; he won the United Press International | ||||||
9 | Best Television Sports Play-by-Play Award for his coverage of | ||||||
10 | University of Illinois basketball in 1980 and the Best Newscast | ||||||
11 | award presented by the Associated Press in 1988; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, David Shaul was a member of the Champaign-Urbana | ||||||
13 | Kiwanis Club, the First Presbyterian Church in Champaign, the | ||||||
14 | Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity, the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and | ||||||
15 | the Champaign Public Library Foundation; he was also a proud | ||||||
16 | volunteer for the C-U Kiwanis Tom Jones Challenger League; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, David Shaul is survived by his children, Annalisa | ||||||
18 | (Brian) Cockerham, Elizabeth (David) Jones, and David | ||||||
19 | (Elizabeth) Shaul; and his grandchildren, Molly and Abby | ||||||
20 | Cockerham, Benjamin and Sarah Jones, and Nathan and Nicholas | ||||||
21 | Shaul; therefore, be it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | David C. Shaul, and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
4 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
5 | further | ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to the family of David Shaul as an expression of our | ||||||
8 | deepest sympathy.
