2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of George A. Collias, who passed away on |
4 | | June 13, 2017; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, George Collias served as a United States Army |
6 | | paratrooper toward the end of World War II and was active duty |
7 | | in the Army Reserve for 28 years; he graduated from |
8 | | Northwestern University and the Loyola University School of |
9 | | Law; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, George Collias had a five-year career as a lawyer |
11 | | at Baker McKenzie; he then launched a broadcasting company, |
12 | | Century Broadcasting; in 1964, he and a college friend bought |
13 | | their first FM radio station in St. Louis, Missouri; over the |
14 | | next 34 years, Century Broadcasting, a Chicago-based company |
15 | | headquartered in the John Hancock building, grew across the |
16 | | country, playing rock, jazz, and easy listening over the air |
17 | | waves in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Boston, |
18 | | Dallas, Detroit, St. Louis, and Tampa; he sold the company's |
19 | | final hometown station, WPNT-FM, in 1996; and

20 | | WHEREAS, George Collias was a leader at the Hellenic |
21 | | Foundation and an active member of Leadership 100, an endowment |
22 | | fund for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese that supports the |
