2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Michael Edward Pollock of Urbana, who | ||||||
4 | passed away on May 28, 2017; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Michael Pollock was born in Cleveland, Ohio on | ||||||
6 | June 5, 1949; he, his older sister, Betsy Lou, and the rest of | ||||||
7 | his family eventually landed in Highland Park; he graduated | ||||||
8 | from the University of Illinois in 1967 with majors in | ||||||
9 | political science and history, and where he was involved in the | ||||||
10 | civil rights and anti-war movements; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Michael Pollock married Renee and they spent 45 | ||||||
12 | years together; they had two children, Elisabeth (Christian | ||||||
13 | Ray) and Henry, and two grandchildren, Gabriel and Tristan; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Michael Pollock was a co-owner of Record Service, | ||||||
15 | a mainstay of the alternative campus community, where he spent | ||||||
16 | 27 years; he was an Urbana alderman for eight years, chairman | ||||||
17 | of the Urbana Plan Commission for 12 years, and board member | ||||||
18 | and president of the Eastern Illinois Foodbank; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Michael Pollock went back to school at Eastern | ||||||
20 | Illinois University, earning a teaching certificate and a | ||||||
21 | master's degree in history; he began his second career as a |

1 | social studies teacher at Urbana High School; he loved working | ||||||
2 | with students and introducing them to the world of critical | ||||||
3 | thinking and historical analysis; he wrote a class called | ||||||
4 | Modern American History through film and music; his room rocked | ||||||
5 | with music, often to the dismay of his colleagues; he was also | ||||||
6 | department head and the sponsor for the Gay-Straight Alliance; | ||||||
7 | and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Michael Pollock ran a mock election program, | ||||||
9 | registered voters, and had many students work as county | ||||||
10 | election judges to encourage their future involvement in civic | ||||||
11 | life; he also mentored many student teachers; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Michael Pollock enjoyed gardening, canning, | ||||||
13 | biking, reading, woodworking, and creating quirky idiomatic | ||||||
14 | art; therefore, be it
| ||||||
15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
17 | Michael Edward Pollock, and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
18 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
19 | further

20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
21 | presented to the family of Michael Pollock as an expression of | ||||||
22 | our deepest sympathy.
