SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Reverend Dr. Eugene Hobday Winkler of
4Naperville, who passed away on June 16, 2017; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Eugene Winkler was born in Dewitt, Arkansas to
6Eugene D. and Hester E. Winkler on December 28, 1933; he was a
7proud Eagle Scout and was lovingly married to Marilyn Louise
8Moyer Winkler; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Eugene Winkler was a United Methodist preacher who
10served local congregations in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri,
11and Illinois for more than 50 years; he was the senior pastor
12of the First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple; he
13was an acclaimed preacher, a deeply and widely read man, and a
14noted theologian; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Eugene Winkler was a founder of Protestants for
16the Common Good; he served on the Illinois Gaming Board, and
17with the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties
18Union, Wiley College, Garrett Evangelical Theological
19Seminary, and countless other organizations; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Eugene Winkler was a believer in forgiveness,
21love, mercy, kindness, and justice; he was a historian on the

1Civil War and his beloved City of Chicago; he was a ceaseless
2advocate for civil rights and inclusion of all people and was
3known for his commitment to social justice causes; he was
4passionately involved in struggles against racism, war,
5poverty, and was fearless in his advocacy; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Eugene Winkler was preceded in death by his wife
7of 60 years, Marilyn, and his brothers, Paul (Gail) and Edward
8(Nina); and
 
9    WHEREAS, Eugene Winkler is survived by his children, James
10(Michelle), Christopher (Kerry), and Grace Elizabeth (Jim)
11Cranley; his grandchildren, Kristen (Darren) Garvey, Brandon
12(Sharlene), Grace (Alan) Shwartz, Samuel, Austin, Maddie, and
13Zaida; and his great-grandchildren, Elliott and Leo;
14therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Reverend Dr. Eugene Hobday Winkler, and extend our sincere
18condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
19him; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Eugene Winkler as an expression of
22our deepest sympathy.
