SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Catherine "Kay" Mary Bartsch Hanley of Wilmette, who passed away on September 27, 2017; and

WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley was born on April 25, 1923, during the Roaring Twenties, and she fondly remembered her parents enjoying the night life in Chicago and spending Sunday afternoons with her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins; she grew up during the Depression, but she was always grateful for a happy and stable family; she graduated from St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette and New Trier High School; she then attended the University of Illinois, where she joined the Alpha Xi Omega sorority; and

WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley moved to Washington, D.C. to help with the war effort; during her time there, she worked as a bookkeeper for the United States Navy and reconciled the accounting records for ships at sea, witnessed FDR's funeral procession, and experienced the joy of VJ Day in the nation's capital; and

WHEREAS, After the war, Catherine returned to Chicago and continued to work as a bookkeeper, first for Encyclopedia Britannica, then for a large international beef cattle company, and finally, for a large North Shore dental practice, where she remained until age 80; in 1962, she met John "Pat" Hanley through a mutual friend; they married and had two children; and

WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley loved reading and history but focused on living in the present with her family; she was always optimistic about the future and was unfailingly energized by an afternoon drive to see her beloved Lake Michigan or by talking about Chicago's rich traditions and pastimes; and

WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley was an avid Cubs fan and attended some of the most important games in the history of the franchise, including a 1945 World Series game and the famous Babe Ruth "called shot" game in the 1932 Series; since the Cubs failed to win either of those championships, she had to wait nearly 80 years to watch them win a World Series title; and

WHEREAS, Catherine Hanley was the beloved wife of the late Pat Hanley; the loving mother of Beth (Chris) Dunn and John F. (Amy) Hanley; the proud grandmother of Jack, Patrick, and Katie Dunn and Bridge, Ellie, and Claire Hanley; the dear sister of the late Jack (Peg) Bartsch; and the fond aunt to many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Catherine "Kay" Mary Bartsch Hanley and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Catherine Bartsch as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
