| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of the Reverend George J. Dyer, who passed |
| 4 | | away on December 3, 2017; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Father Dyer was born in Chicago on November 3, |
| 6 | | 1927 and attended Our Lady of Sorrows School and Quigley |
| 7 | | Preparatory Seminary; he was ordained on May 1, 1953; he |
| 8 | | received his doctorate in Sacred Theology in 1955 and taught |
| 9 | | Patristics and Systematic Theology at St. Mary of the Lake |
| 10 | | Seminary; in 1967, he was named Dean of Studies and served in |
| 11 | | that position for nine years; he became pastor of St. Patrick |
| 12 | | Church in Wadsworth in 1978; during his tenure, a new church |
| 13 | | was built and the first Mass was celebrated on May 11, 1991; he |
| 14 | | retired from St. Patrick in 1996; following a brief sabbatical, |
| 15 | | he served as a weekend presider at St. Julian Eymard Parish in |
| 16 | | Elk Grove Village until 2016; most recently, he ministered to |
| 17 | | the retirement community of Sedgebrook in Lincolnshire; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Father Dyer founded the theological journal, |
| 19 | | Chicago Studies; he published a weekly column under the name of |
| 20 | | Androgogy, which appeared in a thousand parish bulletins; he |
| 21 | | wrote and narrated the Three Minute Theologian, an |
| 22 | | audiocassette presentation based on current themes and |
| 23 | | Catholic teaching; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, In 1982, the Catholic Theological Society of |
| 2 | | America awarded Father Dyer its John Courtney Murray medal for |
| 3 | | his "distinguished contributions" to theology; and
|
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Father Dyer was preceded in death by his parents, |
| 5 | | George M. and Mae (DeLacy) Dyer, and his sister, Marian Alice |
| 6 | | Brookman; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Father Dyer is survived by his brother-in-law, |
| 8 | | William T. Brookman; his nieces and a nephew, Marlie (Martin) |
| 9 | | Morin, Barbara Brookman, and William G. (Nancy) Brookman; his |
| 10 | | grandnieces and nephews, Melissa (Robert) Hutchison, Michael |
| 11 | | (Kristen) Morin, Lauren (Scott) Brookman-Frazee, and Shara |
| 12 | | (James) Brookman Smith; and his great-nieces and nephews, |
| 13 | | Matthew (Michelle Shimon) Hutchison, Meaghan Hutchison, |
| 14 | | Maureen Hutchison, Courtney Morin, Patrick Morin, Emily Morin, |
| 15 | | Joshua Morin, Geta Morin, Daniel Frazee, and Tamene Morin; |
| 16 | | therefore, be it

| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
| 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 19 | | the Reverend George J. Dyer, and extend our sincere condolences |
| 20 | | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be |
| 21 | | it further
