2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Loretta Louise "Weezie" Scheffel, who |
4 | | passed away on January 11, 2018; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Louise Scheffel was born to John and Lora (Wood) |
6 | | Gillingham, the fifth of twelve children, on March 2, 1922; she |
7 | | lived to play ball with her brothers, and as an adolescent, she |
8 | | played on a girls' traveling ball team; she married John |
9 | | Scheffel on April 5, 1941; and
|
10 | | WHEREAS, Louise Scheffel was a stay-at-home mom while her |
11 | | children were small; she later worked at Geers Department Store |
12 | | and Boyd Memorial Hospital; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, At the age of 92, Louise Scheffel published a book |
14 | | titled, With God's Help We Made It, a collection of her |
15 | | memories of growing up in a large family during the Great |
16 | | Depression; she was recognized as an Illinois author on the |
17 | | floor of the Illinois Senate by Senator Sam McCann in March |
18 | | 2015, a moment she treasured; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, Louise Scheffel was the oldest member of the |
20 | | Presbyterian Church in Carrollton and also attended the |
21 | | Methodist Church, where she was recognized as "Methodist Woman |

1 | | of the Year" due to her service to the church; she jokingly |
2 | | referred to herself as a "Methoterian"; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, Louise Scheffel was a fantastic cook and known for |
4 | | her pumpkin pie, homemade noodles, and wacky cake; she was a |
5 | | talented seamstress and made numerous dresses, outfits, and |
6 | | costumes; she loved her family and helping anyone who needed |
7 | | her; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Louise Scheffel was preceded in death by her |
9 | | parents; her husband, John; her son-in-law, Charles Anderson; |
10 | | her grandson, Charles Anderson Jr.; her brothers, Willis, |
11 | | Harry, and John Gillingham; and her sisters, Lillian Helderman, |
12 | | Mary Chapman, Betty Gerson, and Neoma Schmidt; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Louise Scheffel is survived by her children, John |
14 | | (Linda) Scheffel Jr., Barbara Anderson, and Susan (Kim) |
15 | | Postlewait; her grandchildren, Tom Anderson, Lisa (Ed) |
16 | | Davenport, Karen (Stanley) Weimer, Heidi (Brian) McDonald, |
17 | | Erin Settles, Sarah Wagoner, Elizabeth (Jacob) Warford, and |
18 | | Robin (Jason) Hasty; her "adopted grandchildren," Eric, James, |
19 | | and Ryker; her many great and great-great-grandchildren; her |
20 | | siblings, Neal Gillingham, Darlene Carmean, and JoAnn Roth; and |
21 | | her many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
