| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Thomas Joseph "Tom" McHugh of Lake | ||||||
| 4 | Forest; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Tom McHugh was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania to | ||||||
| 6 | Edward and Eleanor McHugh on September 20, 1935; he graduated | ||||||
| 7 | from Scranton Preparatory School in 1953 and from The | ||||||
| 8 | University of Scranton in 1957, where he was Magna cum Laude | ||||||
| 9 | and captain of the basketball team; he earned his Bachelor of | ||||||
| 10 | Laws from Georgetown University and his Master of Laws from New | ||||||
| 11 | York University in 1960 and 1962, respectively; he was | ||||||
| 12 | certified as a CPA and admitted to the bar in the District of | ||||||
| 13 | Columbia; and
| ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Tom McHugh began his corporate career as manager | ||||||
| 15 | of the tax department for Ingersoll-Rand; he became an officer | ||||||
| 16 | and vice president in charge of taxes at Kraft, Inc, in | ||||||
| 17 | Glenview; during his career, he served as an officer and | ||||||
| 18 | director of several national organizations dedicated to | ||||||
| 19 | improving federal tax policy and was instrumental in the | ||||||
| 20 | passage of the historic Tax Reform Act of 1986; and | ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Tom McHugh served on the IRS Commissioner's | ||||||
| 22 | Advisory Council; he was the founding president of the Illinois | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | Business Roundtable and served on the boards of The University | ||||||
| 2 | of Scranton, Marywood University, and Marymount College; and
| ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Tom McHugh was honored by the University of | ||||||
| 4 | Scranton with its Frank J. O'Hara Distinguished Alumni Award; | ||||||
| 5 | and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Tom McHugh founded Witness Ministries, a national | ||||||
| 7 | Catholic/Christian publishing firm focused on the Mass and the | ||||||
| 8 | Eucharist; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Tom McHugh is survived by his wife of 51 years, | ||||||
| 10 | Joan Carter McHugh; his children, Tom McHugh Jr. (Sinead), | ||||||
| 11 | Katie McHugh Ranke (Greg), Dan McHugh (Pippa), and Rich McHugh | ||||||
| 12 | (Danie); 13 grandchildren; his sisters, Betty Antalics and | ||||||
| 13 | Janet Bartley; and his brother, Fr. Richard McHugh S.J.; | ||||||
| 14 | therefore, be it

| 15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 17 | Thomas Joseph "Tom" McHugh, and extend our sincere condolences | ||||||
| 18 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
| 19 | it further
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 21 | presented to the family of Tom McHugh as an expression of our | ||||||
