|
2 | | WHEREAS, Epilepsy is a medical condition that produces |
3 | | seizures and affects a variety of mental and physical |
4 | | functions; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, 65 million people around the world have epilepsy; |
6 | | and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Nearly three million people in the United States |
8 | | have epilepsy; one in 26 people in the United States will |
9 | | develop epilepsy at some point in their lifetime; there are |
10 | | 150,000 new cases of epilepsy in the United States every year; |
11 | | and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Over 200,000 people in the State of Illinois have |
13 | | epilepsy; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological |
15 | | disorder in the United States after migraines, stroke, and |
16 | | Alzheimer's disease; the prevalence of epilepsy is greater than |
17 | | autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, |
18 | | and Parkinson's disease combined; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, One-third of people with epilepsy live with |
20 | | uncontrollable seizures because no available treatment works |

1 | | for them; and |
2 | | WHEREAS, In the United States, 50,000 people die from |
3 | | epilepsy-related causes every year; and
|
4 | | WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation affiliates in Illinois |
5 | | offer counseling, advocacy, and educational services to people |
6 | | with epilepsy, their families, and the communities in which |
7 | | they live; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, The Epilepsy Foundation affiliates of Illinois |
9 | | lead the fight to stop seizures, find a cure, and overcome |
10 | | challenges created by epilepsy; therefore, be it
|
11 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
12 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March 1, |
13 | | 2018 as Illinois Epilepsy Advocacy Day in the State of |
14 | | Illinois; and be it further

15 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be |
16 | | presented to the Epilepsy Foundation of Chicago, the
Epilepsy |
17 | | Foundation of North Central Illinois, and the
Epilepsy |
18 | | Foundation of Southern Illinois.
