2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Ralph D. Glenn of Mattoon, who passed |
4 | | away on April 6, 2018; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was born in Lexington to Robert and |
6 | | Thelma (Derry) Glenn on October 15, 1929; he graduated from |
7 | | Yorkville High School in 1947 and attended college at Illinois |
8 | | Wesleyan University from 1947 to 1949, where he played football |
9 | | and baseball; he earned his bachelor's degree and his Juris |
10 | | Doctor from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he |
11 | | was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1953 and served in the U.S. |
12 | | Army from 1953 to 1955; he completed his initial training at |
13 | | Ft. Riley, Kansas and then served as an intelligence officer |
14 | | and investigator with the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps at |
15 | | Ft. Holabird in Maryland; he was recognized as an Outstanding |
16 | | Trainee at Ft. Riley and received a commendation for exemplary |
17 | | service from the Counter Intelligence Corps; he married Shirley |
18 | | Rudman on September 10, 1955; and
|
19 | | WHEREAS, In 1955, Ralph Glenn and Shirley moved to Mattoon, |
20 | | and Ralph joined the law firm of Craig & Craig; he became an |
21 | | assistant state's attorney in 1958; in 1960, he was elected |
22 | | State's Attorney of Coles County, a position he held until |
23 | | 1968; he published Illinois Misdemeanor Forms, a book widely |

1 | | used by area prosecutors at that time; in 1966, he co-founded |
2 | | the Glenn & Logue Law Firm; in 1968, he was chosen to serve as |
3 | | president of the Illinois State's Attorneys Association; he |
4 | | continued practicing law until the end of 2014, when he retired |
5 | | after a 59-year career; during his career, he argued cases at |
6 | | the Circuit, Appellate, and Supreme Court levels, as well as |
7 | | before the U.S. District and U.S. Tax Courts; and |
8 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn coached local youth baseball teams and |
9 | | served as the Commissioner for Mattoon's Jaycee Baseball League |
10 | | for 20 years; he received the Pop Warner Award, and in 1967, |
11 | | the baseball field at Vanlaningham Park was named the Ralph |
12 | | Glenn Field; early in his life, he was named Young Man of the |
13 | | Year by the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce; and |
14 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was a member of the Central Community |
15 | | Church, the First Presbyterian Church, the Mattoon Jaycees, the |
16 | | Association of Commerce, the American Legion, and the Moose |
17 | | Club; he served on the E-7 Hospital Association Board from 1970 |
18 | | to 1979, which oversaw the development, organization, |
19 | | administration, and opening of the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health |
20 | | Center in 1977; and |
21 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was a member of the Mattoon Golf & |
22 | | Country Club for many years and enjoyed playing golf with his |
23 | | wife and in men's leagues; on two occasions, he shot holes in |

1 | | one on the club course; and |
2 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was a lifelong fan of the Chicago |
3 | | Cubs, and he often told the story of how he and a group of ten |
4 | | friends traveled in one car, slept overnight on the sidewalk |
5 | | outside of Wrigley Field, and then paid $1 each for bleacher |
6 | | seats to attend game 7 of the 1945 World Series against the |
7 | | Detroit Tigers; 71 years later, he was watching with his family |
8 | | from his home in Mattoon as his beloved Cubs won the World |
9 | | Series in 2016; and

10 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; |
11 | | his wife, Shirley; his brothers, Robert and Howard Glenn; his |
12 | | sisters, Dorothy Felker and Mary Quinton; and his sons-in-law, |
13 | | Bruce Scott Doty and Clifford Brown; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Ralph Glenn is survived by his children, James |
15 | | (Laura) Glenn, Michael (Bridgit) Glenn, Cheryl (Douglas) |
16 | | Meyer, and Sharon Brown; his grandchildren, Kyle Glenn, Lindsey |
17 | | Glenn, Michelle (Luke) Wilson, Miranda (Jeremy) Sullivan, |
18 | | Kevin Glenn, Andi Glenn, Andrew Meyer, Todd Meyer, Christina |
19 | | Meyer, and Nicholas Doty; his great-grandchild, Maddie |
20 | | Sullivan; and his sister, Lois Murray; therefore, be it
