2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Harold W. Sundelius, Ph.D., K.N.O. of | ||||||
4 | Moline, who passed away on June 17, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was born in Escanaba, Michigan to | ||||||
6 | Herbert A. and Caroline Johnson Sundelius on July 6, 1930; he | ||||||
7 | graduated Magna cum Laude from Augustana College in 1952; upon | ||||||
8 | graduation from Augustana, he received a Fulbright Fellowship, | ||||||
9 | which enabled him to pursue graduate studies at the University | ||||||
10 | of Oslo in Norway; once he returned, he was drafted into the | ||||||
11 | United States Army and served in Japan and Korea from 1953 | ||||||
12 | until 1955; after completing his military service, he resumed | ||||||
13 | his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, where he | ||||||
14 | earned his master of science and Ph.D.; he was also awarded the | ||||||
15 | C.K. Keith Fellowship and was named a University Fellow; he | ||||||
16 | married Charlene Swanson on May 21, 1955; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius joined the U.S. Geological | ||||||
18 | Survey and served in military geology and Eastern U.S. regional | ||||||
19 | geology from 1959 until 1965; he then joined the faculty of | ||||||
20 | Wittenberg University in Ohio, where he became an associate | ||||||
21 | dean, professor, and chair of geology; in 1957, he returned to | ||||||
22 | Augustana as a professor of geology, vice president and dean; | ||||||
23 | he retired as professor emeritus of geology in 1995; and

1 | WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was a fellow in the Geological | ||||||
2 | Society of America and held many other professional | ||||||
3 | memberships, including the Society of Sigma Xi, Phi Beta Kappa, | ||||||
4 | Omicron Delta Kappa, the Society of Economic Geologists, and | ||||||
5 | the Rotary Club of Rock Island; he was proud of his Swedish | ||||||
6 | heritage and served as President of the Augustana Historical | ||||||
7 | Society; he was a member of the American Scandinavian | ||||||
8 | Association at Augustana College and served on the board of the | ||||||
9 | Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center; for his | ||||||
10 | leadership in academics and the promotion of ties between the | ||||||
11 | United States and Sweden, he was accorded the rank of Knight in | ||||||
12 | the Royal Order of the North Star (Kungliga Nordstjarneorden) | ||||||
13 | by his Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in 1996; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius was preceded in death by his | ||||||
15 | wife, Charlene; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Harold Sundelius is survived by his daughters, | ||||||
17 | Karen (Gary Risch) Sundelius and Kristine (Brad) Lundine; his | ||||||
18 | grandchildren, Andrew (Cassie) and Matthew Pappas, and Sarah, | ||||||
19 | Anna, Elizabeth, and Mark Lundine; his great-grandson, Drew | ||||||
20 | Pappas; and his sister, Lorian Sundelius Swanson; therefore, be | ||||||
21 | it

1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
2 | Harold W. Sundelius, Ph.D., K.N.O. and extend our sincere | ||||||
3 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
4 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to the family of Harold Sundelius as an expression of | ||||||
7 | our deepest sympathy.
