| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of George Makela of Waukegan, who passed |
| 4 | | away on July 15, 2018; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, George Makela was born in Waukegan to Oiva and |
| 6 | | Edna Makela on August 26, 1922; he graduated from Waukegan High |
| 7 | | School in 1942 and joined the U.S. Marines; he served during |
| 8 | | World War II in the Pacific and rose to the rank of Sergeant; |
| 9 | | and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Following his service during World War II, George |
| 11 | | Makela worked with his father at the family store, Makela's |
| 12 | | Grocery; he retired from Copley Newspaper as a classified ad |
| 13 | | manager; and |
| 14 | | WHEREAS, George Makela refereed basketball in Lake County |
| 15 | | for 15 years; he loved to play golf at Bonnie Brook Golf Course |
| 16 | | in Waukegan; he also enjoyed morning coffee with his breakfast |
| 17 | | friends at The Sunset House and The Avalon; he and his wife |
| 18 | | spent many years wintering in Ahwatukee, Arizona; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, George Makela participated in an Honor Flight to |
| 20 | | Washington D.C. with fellow World War II veterans; and
|
