SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Steven Ray "Steve" Smothers of Pittsfield, who passed away on July 26, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Steve Smothers was born in Pittsfield to Donna M. Smothers on March 2, 1954; he graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1973 and married Sandy Bergman at Detroit Christian Church on November 24, 1973; and

WHEREAS, Steve Smothers worked for Saylor Livestock for several years; he then spent 25 years as manager at Kitchen Seed in Pittsfield; he went on to work for 20 years as an inspector for the Department of Agriculture; he also served as an alderman for the city of Pittsfield for 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Steve Smothers was a member of the Pittsfield Church of the Nazarene; he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, mowing, and spending time with his family; he also enjoyed collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia; and

WHEREAS, Steve Smothers was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Marie Smothers, and his uncles, Lee, Jim, and Bill Patterson; and

WHEREAS, Steve Smothers is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Sandy; his son, Robert (Candie) Smothers Sr.; his daughters, Crystal (Jason) Huss and Candice (Olufemi) Famuwagun; his grandchildren, Brittany (Austin Dove) Smothers, Breanna Smothers, Robert Smothers Jr., MJ Famuwagun, Grayson Huss, and Ryland Huss; his great-grandchild, Layla Nicole Dove; his brothers, Larry and Gary (Ashley) Smothers; and his sister, Susan Brown; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Steven Ray "Steve" Smothers, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Steve Smothers as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
