2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Doris Jean Wenzel of Mahomet, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on August 29, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel was born in Paradise Township to Glen | ||||||
6 | Carl and Olive "Ruth" (Coen) Waggoner on February 11, 1940; the | ||||||
7 | youngest of 10 sisters and two brothers, at the age of two, she | ||||||
8 | and her sisters were made wards of the court and separated; she | ||||||
9 | was then adopted by Forest "Dale" and Sarah "Amanda" (Thompson) | ||||||
10 | Replogle of Charleston in July 1942; she attended Lincoln Grace | ||||||
11 | School, Jefferson Junior High, and Charleston High School, | ||||||
12 | where she was active in cheerleading, theater, and debate; she | ||||||
13 | married Jerry Lee Porter, and they had seven children; the | ||||||
14 | marriage later ended; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel worked for the Leo Burnett | ||||||
16 | advertising agency for many years before studying at the | ||||||
17 | College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, where she wrote for the school | ||||||
18 | paper, participated in theater, and was part of the winning | ||||||
19 | national forensics team; she earned a bachelor's degree at | ||||||
20 | North Central College in Naperville, where she won the Lincoln | ||||||
21 | Academy Award; she was featured in a film for the American | ||||||
22 | Endowment for the Humanities, received national awards in | ||||||
23 | theater, speech, acting, and writing, and received the Richter |

1 | Fellowship, which allowed her to research the life of Mary Todd | ||||||
2 | Lincoln and write and produce a play based on her research; she | ||||||
3 | earned her Master's Degree in Communication at Illinois State | ||||||
4 | University in 1985; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, After completing her master's degree, Doris | ||||||
6 | Wenzel was a visiting teaching assistant at the University of | ||||||
7 | Illinois, where she met Harry, a professor of Civil Engineering | ||||||
8 | and Assistant Dean in the College of Engineering; they married | ||||||
9 | on May 28, 1998; she also taught classes at the College of | ||||||
10 | DuPage, Parkland College, and Lincoln College; she taught | ||||||
11 | federal compliance at a financial institution in Bloomington; | ||||||
12 | in 1990, she founded Mayhaven Publishing, where she published | ||||||
13 | hundreds of books including two she wrote with her sisters, Ten | ||||||
14 | Sisters: A True Story and Ten Little Sisters; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel was a member of the Screen Actors | ||||||
16 | Guild, the Fortnightly Club, and the Urbana Rotary; she was a | ||||||
17 | frequent customer at the Hen House in Mahomet with her husband | ||||||
18 | and friends; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
20 | her two brothers; her seven sisters; and her son, Brian Harvey | ||||||
21 | Porter; and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel is survived by her husband, Harry; |

1 | her sisters, Irma Allen and Vera Barber; her sons, Todd | ||||||
2 | (Christina Marchisano) Porter, Cullen (Jen) Porter, Aaron | ||||||
3 | (Teri) Porter, and Quintin (Elise) Porter; her daughters, | ||||||
4 | Teresa (Paul) Hackler and Michelle (Brett) Petersen; and her | ||||||
5 | daughter-in-law, Lynn (Brian) Porter; therefore, be it
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
7 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
8 | Doris Jean Wenzel and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
9 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
10 | further

11 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
12 | presented to the family of Doris Wenzel as an expression of our | ||||||
13 | deepest sympathy.
