SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Doris Jean Wenzel of Mahomet, who passed
4away on August 29, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel was born in Paradise Township to Glen
6Carl and Olive "Ruth" (Coen) Waggoner on February 11, 1940; the
7youngest of 10 sisters and two brothers, at the age of two, she
8and her sisters were made wards of the court and separated; she
9was then adopted by Forest "Dale" and Sarah "Amanda" (Thompson)
10Replogle of Charleston in July 1942; she attended Lincoln Grace
11School, Jefferson Junior High, and Charleston High School,
12where she was active in cheerleading, theater, and debate; she
13married Jerry Lee Porter, and they had seven children; the
14marriage later ended; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel worked for the Leo Burnett
16advertising agency for many years before studying at the
17College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, where she wrote for the school
18paper, participated in theater, and was part of the winning
19national forensics team; she earned a bachelor's degree at
20North Central College in Naperville, where she won the Lincoln
21Academy Award; she was featured in a film for the American
22Endowment for the Humanities, received national awards in
23theater, speech, acting, and writing, and received the Richter

1Fellowship, which allowed her to research the life of Mary Todd
2Lincoln and write and produce a play based on her research; she
3earned her Master's Degree in Communication at Illinois State
4University in 1985; and
 
5    WHEREAS, After completing her master's degree, Doris
6Wenzel was a visiting teaching assistant at the University of
7Illinois, where she met Harry, a professor of Civil Engineering
8and Assistant Dean in the College of Engineering; they married
9on May 28, 1998; she also taught classes at the College of
10DuPage, Parkland College, and Lincoln College; she taught
11federal compliance at a financial institution in Bloomington;
12in 1990, she founded Mayhaven Publishing, where she published
13hundreds of books including two she wrote with her sisters, Ten
14Sisters: A True Story and Ten Little Sisters; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel was a member of the Screen Actors
16Guild, the Fortnightly Club, and the Urbana Rotary; she was a
17frequent customer at the Hen House in Mahomet with her husband
18and friends; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel was preceded in death by her parents;
20her two brothers; her seven sisters; and her son, Brian Harvey
21Porter; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Doris Wenzel is survived by her husband, Harry;

1her sisters, Irma Allen and Vera Barber; her sons, Todd
2(Christina Marchisano) Porter, Cullen (Jen) Porter, Aaron
3(Teri) Porter, and Quintin (Elise) Porter; her daughters,
4Teresa (Paul) Hackler and Michelle (Brett) Petersen; and her
5daughter-in-law, Lynn (Brian) Porter; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Doris Jean Wenzel and extend our sincere condolences to her
9family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Doris Wenzel as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
