2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Grady Myers Chronister of Springfield, | ||||||
4 | who passed away on September 14, 2018; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was born in Henryetta, Oklahoma | ||||||
6 | to Hugh Grady and Alice Myers Chronister on November 22, 1938; | ||||||
7 | he graduated from Oklahoma State University; he was a Captain | ||||||
8 | in the United States Army and retired from the Army Reserves; | ||||||
9 | and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Grady Chronister's career included retail | ||||||
11 | marketing, national wholesale fuel distribution, and oil | ||||||
12 | trading on the New York Stock Exchange; he was an entrepreneur | ||||||
13 | in the oil industry for 51 years; he began Chronister Oil with | ||||||
14 | Derby Super Gas stores and was a major sponsor of the cardinals | ||||||
15 | farm team; he secured the first self-serve permit in the State | ||||||
16 | of Illinois; he sold the Super Gas chain to Marathon Oil in | ||||||
17 | 1978; he then built another chain, Future Gas, in several | ||||||
18 | Midwestern states outside of Illinois; in 1980, he opened the | ||||||
19 | first convenience store, Quik-n-EZ, in the State, with | ||||||
20 | locations in Springfield and other central Illinois towns; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was an Eagle Scout, an elder in | ||||||
22 | the Westminster Presbyterian Church, a former president of the |

1 | Illini Country Club, and a former president and trustee of the | ||||||
2 | Springfield YMCA; he was also a trustee of the Abraham Lincoln | ||||||
3 | Boy Scouts Council, a supporter of UIS athletics, the arts, and | ||||||
4 | the Illinois Symphony Orchestra; he contributed to many local | ||||||
5 | and statewide non-profit organizations and was a strong | ||||||
6 | supporter of youth programs throughout the area; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was a competitive golfer and | ||||||
8 | duplicate bridge player; he was a compassionate and generous | ||||||
9 | father, husband, and friend and enjoyed spending time with his | ||||||
10 | wife, children, and grandchildren; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Grady Chronister was preceded in death by his | ||||||
12 | parents; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Grady Chronister is survived by his wife, Linda | ||||||
14 | Longworth Chronister; his daughters, Wendy (Pete Rogers) | ||||||
15 | Chronister, Julie (Mark Myers) Chronister, and Amy (John) | ||||||
16 | Ridley; and his grandchildren, Caroline and Carter Rogers, | ||||||
17 | Wyatt Myers, and Emma and Grady Ridley; therefore, be it
| ||||||
18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
20 | Grady Myers Chronister and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
21 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
22 | further
