| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Reverend William John Bernacki, who | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on May 13, 2018 at the age of 93; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Reverend Bernacki was born John Bernacki in | ||||||
| 6 | Chicago to John S. and Valentine J. Bernacki on December 18, | ||||||
| 7 | 1924; he was raised in the Bucktown neighborhood with his | ||||||
| 8 | siblings, Ruth, Thomas, Jerome, and Evelyn; he attended Taft | ||||||
| 9 | High School and left before graduation to enlist in the United | ||||||
| 10 | States Navy in 1943; he served for three years as an aviation | ||||||
| 11 | mechanic during World War II; upon his return, he enrolled at | ||||||
| 12 | Loyola University, where he earned a degree in commerce in | ||||||
| 13 | 1949; he later earned a master's degree in education and | ||||||
| 14 | counseling; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Reverend Bernacki entered the Dominican Order in | ||||||
| 16 | August 1950, where he was given the religious name William; he | ||||||
| 17 | studied for the priesthood at the Dominican House of Studies in | ||||||
| 18 | River Forest, the St. Rose Priory in Dubuque, Iowa, and St. | ||||||
| 19 | Albert's College in Oakland, California; he was ordained in San | ||||||
| 20 | Francisco in 1956; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Reverend Bernacki started his service at Fenwick | ||||||
| 22 | High School in 1959; he taught theology, business law, | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | economics, geography, and civics for 20 years, until he became | ||||||
| 2 | the school's principal; he served as Fenwick's 11th | ||||||
| 3 | principal-president from 1979 until 1987; his service to | ||||||
| 4 | Fenwick High School went beyond his teaching and administrative | ||||||
| 5 | positions and included the roles of business manager, | ||||||
| 6 | counselor, Father's Club moderator, and coach for his beloved | ||||||
| 7 | sport of golf; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Reverend Bernacki left Fenwick in 1987 to become | ||||||
| 9 | the prior at Dominican Priory in River Forest, as well as the | ||||||
| 10 | president of the Priory Press; during this time, he still | ||||||
| 11 | continued to remain active with Fenwick High School in support | ||||||
| 12 | and advisory roles; and
| ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, Reverend Bernacki had been recognized for his | ||||||
| 14 | dedication to Fenwick High School during, and after, the time | ||||||
| 15 | he served there; he was inducted into the Fenwick Hall of Fame | ||||||
| 16 | in 1995, received the Lumen Tranquillum (Quiet Light) Award in | ||||||
| 17 | 2011, and the school's Planned Giving Society was named in his | ||||||
| 18 | honor; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Reverend Bernacki lived at the Resurrection Life | ||||||
| 20 | Center from 2015 until his passing; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Reverend Bernacki is survived by his sister Ruth | ||||||
| 22 | Sabatella; his sister-in-law, Dorothy Young; and his many | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 2 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 3 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 4 | Reverend William John Bernacki and extend our sincere | ||||||
| 5 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 6 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
| 7 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 8 | presented to the family of Reverend Bernacki as an expression | ||||||
| 9 | of our deepest sympathy.
