| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Johnson |
| 4 | | Martin of Watseka, who passed away on October 21, 2018; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was born in Bay City, Michigan to |
| 6 | | Mercedes (McMullen) and J. Lennart Johnson on July 12, 1941; |
| 7 | | she attended the University of Michigan and earned her Master |
| 8 | | of Music in Piano Performance; she married Richard "Dick" |
| 9 | | Martin at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago on August |
| 10 | | 18, 1973; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was an accomplished pianist and also |
| 12 | | played the violin and cello; early in her career, she taught at |
| 13 | | both the Interlochen School of Performing Arts and Central |
| 14 | | Michigan University; she then moved to Chicago and started her |
| 15 | | own company, where she sold computers; in 1989, she became the |
| 16 | | General Manager of WGFA Radio; she took the station to the full |
| 17 | | 50,000 watts it is today and made several positive |
| 18 | | improvements; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was named Chicago Businesswoman of |
| 20 | | the Year in the late 1960s; in the early 1980s, she, along with |
| 21 | | other leading women in the community, began the Iroquois Arts |
| 22 | | and Education Council to bring string, vocal, and piano lessons |

| 1 | | to the community; she served as Chairperson of the Iroquois |
| 2 | | Memorial Hospital (IMH) Development Council from 1991 until |
| 3 | | 2006; she served on the IMH Board of Trustees from 2003 until |
| 4 | | 2014; she was also on the Board of Governors at the County Club |
| 5 | | of Florida in Boynton Beach, Florida; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Maggie Martin enjoyed tennis and snow skiing; she |
| 7 | | also picked up the game of golf and had six holes in one; she |
| 8 | | was an avid reader; she and Dick enjoyed vacationing in Delray |
| 9 | | Beach, Florida during the winters; she was kind, generous, |
| 10 | | spiritual, and loving and left her mark on all who knew her; |
| 11 | | and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Maggie Martin was preceded in death by her parents |
| 13 | | and one grandchild; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Maggie Martin is survived by her husband, Dick; |
| 15 | | her children, Sam (Liz) Martin, Nancy (Mark) Burns, Daniel |
| 16 | | Martin, Gregory Martin, and Stacey Smith; her stepmother, |
| 17 | | Bonnie Johnson; her sister, Debra Gruber; her brothers, Fred |
| 18 | | Johnson, Thomas (Brenda) Teeple, and Pat (Nancy) Johnson; her |
| 19 | | 12 grandchildren; her 10 great-grandchildren; and her many |
| 20 | | aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it
|
| 21 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
