SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Fred J. Paul, who passed away on January
418, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Fred J. Paul was born in Chicago to Henry and
6Marie Paul and raised with his brothers Hank and Bernie; he
7served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during the
8Korean War; upon his return, he married the love of his life,
9Lucille Scaran, on June 6, 1953; Fred and Lucille were "like
10two peas in a pod," always together; Fred, Lucille, and their
11four children made their home, beginning in 1959, in Northlake;
12he worked as a foreman at Classic Sheet Metal in nearby
13Franklin Park; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Fred J. Paul was very active in the community life
15in Northlake and served in various government, political, and
16civic affairs positions for 46 years; in 1971, he was appointed
17to the Police and Fire commission and served five terms; he was
18elected Alderman of two different wards in Northlake for a
19total of 22 years; in 1997, he ran for City Treasurer as part
20of Mayor Jeffrey T. Sherwin's slate; he held this office for 21
21years, up until his death, and published the "Dollars and
22Sense" financial column, where he gave helpful tips and
23information to his constituents; and

1    WHEREAS, Fred J. Paul was a dedicated Northlake baseball
2coach and is fondly remembered and greatly respected by the
3players of his 1969 championship team; he was also a generous
4donor and supporter of Seguin Services, a pioneering,
5innovative, and inclusive approach to services for persons with
6intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Fred J. Paul was a wonderful patriarch and role
8model who loved sports, especially the Chicago Bears, westerns,
9comedies, and more than anything, his family; he greeted all he
10knew with a smile and a joke that always picked up others'
11spirits; he was respected as a family man with an open and
12humble way about him; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Fred J. Paul's record of civic engagement, serving
14the residents of Northlake for 46 years, is unparalleled in the
15city, and his contributions will be sorely missed; he was known
16as "an excellent public servant who was always accessible to
17his constituents and gave his best to the city"; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Fred J. Paul was preceded in death by his loving
19wife, Lucille; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Fred J. Paul is survived by his children, Mary Lou
21(Jim) Miller, Patti Paul, Chris (the late Therese) Paul, and

1Gina (Chris) Devers; his grandchildren, Matthew, Mallory,
2Amanda, Gina, Jonathan, Zachary, Charlotte, Carrie, Marli,
3Joshua, and Danny; his great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Adrian,
4Kailee, Logan, Hannah, Leeah, Andi, Avery, and Mia; his many
5nieces and nephews; and his many friends and admirers;
6therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Fred J. Paul and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
10friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Fred J. Paul as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
