| 1 | | AN ACT concerning education.
|
| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
| 5 | | 2-3.176 as follows: |
| 6 | | (105 ILCS 5/2-3.176 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 2-3.176. Child opportunity zone. |
| 8 | | (a) In this Section, "child opportunity zone" means a |
| 9 | | coordinated system of early childhood education, before-school |
| 10 | | and after-school programs, summer school programs, health and |
| 11 | | mental health services, family engagement initiatives, adult |
| 12 | | education, workforce development training, or any combination |
| 13 | | of such programs. |
| 14 | | (b) Subject to appropriation, the State Board of Education, |
| 15 | | in cooperation with regional superintendents of schools, |
| 16 | | school districts, and other State and community agencies, shall |
| 17 | | develop child opportunity zones as a means to deliver |
| 18 | | comprehensive and coordinated social services in this State |
| 19 | | that are related to specific community needs and that will |
| 20 | | ultimately increase student performance in schools in the |
| 21 | | community. A child opportunity zone must provide a means to |
| 22 | | integrate education, health, and social services into schools |
| 23 | | and link families to school and community resources. Activities |
