| 2 | | WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that we pay honor and respect |
| 3 | | to the truly great individuals
who have served our country and, |
| 4 | | in doing so, have made the
ultimate sacrifice for our nation; |
| 5 | | and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez was killed |
| 7 | | in action on March 21, 2003 while serving his country in |
| 8 | | Operation Iraqi Freedom; he is considered one of the first |
| 9 | | casualties of the Iraq War; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, LCpl. Gutierrez came to the U.S. from Guatemala at |
| 11 | | the age of 14 seeking a better life; at the time of his death, |
| 12 | | he was not yet a citizen of the country for which he sacrificed |
| 13 | | his life; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, LCpl. Gutierrez was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, |
| 15 | | 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, |
| 16 | | California; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, LCpl. Gutierrez spoke of becoming an architect but |
| 18 | | put his college plans on hold to serve in the U.S. Marines; he |
| 19 | | believed that the U.S. gave him everything when he arrived from |
| 20 | | Guatemala with nothing, and he wanted to give back; therefore, |
