HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that we pay honor and respect 
3to the truly great individuals
  who have served our country and, 
4in doing so, have made the
ultimate sacrifice for our nation; 
5and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Jose Gutierrez was killed 
7in action  on March 21, 2003 while serving his country in 
8Operation Iraqi Freedom; he is considered one of the first 
9casualties of the Iraq War; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, LCpl. Gutierrez came to the U.S. from Guatemala at 
11the age of 14 seeking a better life; at the time of his death, 
12he was not yet a citizen of the country for which he sacrificed 
13his life; and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, LCpl. Gutierrez was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 
151st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, 
16California; and
  
 
  
17    WHEREAS, LCpl. Gutierrez spoke of becoming an architect but 
18put his college plans on hold to serve in the U.S. Marines; he 
19believed that the U.S. gave him everything when he arrived from 
20Guatemala with nothing, and he wanted to give back; therefore, 
21be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
2HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
3we urge the City of Chicago to rename Trump Tower Plaza after 
4U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Jose Gutierrez in honor of the 
5sacrifice he made to our country; and be it further
  
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
7presented to the family of LCpl. Gutierrez and the Mayor of 
8Chicago.
