and races worldwide; |
| 4 | | studies have shown that sarcoidosis affects young adults of |
| 5 | | both sexes, with
more cases in females; the disease occurs at a |
| 6 | | higher rate among African Americans and people of
European |
| 7 | | descent; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Many people with sarcoidosis experience |
| 9 | | nonspecific symptoms of fever, fatigue,
weight loss, night |
| 10 | | sweats, and an overall feeling of malaise; these symptoms most |
| 11 | | often result in the
disease going untreated; the disease most |
| 12 | | commonly targets the lungs and lymph nodes but may
occur in the |
| 13 | | eyes, skin, or any other area of the body; it causes the immune |
| 14 | | system to attack the
body's own tissues; and

| 15 | | WHEREAS, Although prevalence rates for sarcoidosis can |
| 16 | | only be estimated, the estimated prevalence rates in the United |
| 17 | | States range from
one to 40 per 100,000 people; and
|
| 18 | | WHEREAS, While progress has been made in understanding |
| 19 | | sarcoidosis, the cause is
unknown, and it is likely that there |
| 20 | | may be more than one cause; there is currently no cure for |
| 21 | | sarcoidosis; and
