HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to commend John Slater on his dedication to the Boy Scouts of America; and

WHEREAS, John Slater earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1938 with Troop 814 and has continued to be a volunteer and leader most of his adult life; he has been an inspiration for countless young people, awarding them Good Citizenship Citations from the American Legion in the Midwest during their Eagle Scout Courts of Honor; truly one of the best examples of one who lives by the Scout Oath and Law, he is selfless in his service to others and has dedicated himself to guide others along that worthy path; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, John Slater has remained involved in the Boy Scouts of America; he is also actively involved in the American Legion and the Skokie VFW; he is an enthusiastic volunteer and supporter of the Friends of the Morton Grove Forest Preserve, the Chicago Botanic Garden, the Morton Grove Historical Society, and various other civic organizations in the community; and

WHEREAS, John Slater grew up and spent his early childhood in Chicago; he studied engineering at Iowa State University and joined the U.S. Army; he went directly to Officer Candidate School and was attached to the 77th Infantry Division during World War II; and

WHEREAS, John Slater and his family have lived in Morton Grove since 1960; he and his late wife, Mary Helen, have one son, Mark, who lives in Northern California; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend John Slater on his dedication to the Boy Scouts of America; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to John Slater as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
