HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Rotary International is a global network of 1.2 
3million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who 
4unite and take action to create lasting change in communities 
5across the globe; and
  
 
6    WHEREAS, The Rotary's motto, Service Above Self, inspires 
7members to provide humanitarian service, follow high ethical 
8standards, and promote goodwill and peace in the world; and
  
 
9    WHEREAS, In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus to immunize the 
10children of the world against polio; in 1988, the organization 
11helped establish the Global Polio Eradication Initiative; 
12partners in this initiative include the World Health 
13Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and 
14Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; 
15and
  
 
16    WHEREAS, Since 1988, polio cases have dropped by 99.9 
17percent, and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating 
18the disease; and
  
 
19    WHEREAS, Rotary is working to raise an additional $50 
20million per year, which would be leveraged for maximum impact 
21by an additional $100 million annually from the Bill & Melinda

1Gates Foundation; and
  
 
2    WHEREAS, These efforts are providing much-needed 
3operational support, medical staff, laboratory equipment, and 
4educational materials for health workers and parents; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, In addition, Rotary has played a major role in 
6decisions by government partners to contribute more than $8 
7billion to the effort; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Throughout the State, there are over 11,700 
9Rotarians in more than 330 clubs that sponsor service projects 
10to address critical issues in their local communities and 
11abroad, including poverty, disease, hunger, illiteracy, and 
12the environment; therefore, be it
  
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
14HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
15we declare October 24, 2019 as World Polio Day in the State of 
16Illinois; and be it further

  
 
17    RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this resolution be 
18presented to Rotary International as an expression of our 
19esteem and respect.
