HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Fred Richard Hunter Jr. of Chicago, who passed away on September 13, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Fred Hunter Jr. was born in Chicago to Ezzie Mae Jackson Hunter and Fred Richard Hunter Sr. on February 25, 1948; he committed to his faith at an early age and was baptized at Antioch M.B. Church; he attended Chicago Public Schools and graduated from Wendell Phillips High School in 1965; he received his Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in French from Illinois State University; he received his Master of Arts in English from Chicago State University; a lifelong learner, he continued coursework related to his chosen field, including proposal writing, communications, and curriculum development, at a number of area colleges and universities; and

WHEREAS, Fred Hunter Jr. began his career in education with the Chicago Board of Education in 1969; he accepted assignments at Bowen High School, where he taught English, and Whitney Young High School, where he taught English, grammar, literature, and journalism and was the Faculty Advisor for the school newspaper, The Beacon; his classes were often fun-filled, creative, and challenging; he later worked as an editor for the Office of Instructional Services at the Chicago Public Schools Central Office; he retired from that department in 2004; after retirement, he worked for the Chicago Defender and started his own business, Fred's Ed Editorial Services; and

WHEREAS, Fred Hunter Jr. was active in his community and was a member of the National and Chicago Associations of Black Journalists; he was a member of the Antioch M.B. Church for many years; later, he transferred his membership to Mt. Pisgah M.B. Church, the church his mother attended for over 50 years, and was a member of the male chorus; he enjoyed spending time with his classmates from Wendell Phillips and Illinois State University, playing Bid Whist, dancing, playing tennis, and wearing his Green Bay Packers wool cap; he will be remembered for his good deeds and as a funny, considerate, caring person who put the needs of others before his own; and

WHEREAS, Fred Hunter Jr. is survived by his sister, Carolyn; his nephews, Lamar and Antoine; his godsons, Darian, David, and DuJuan; his Wendell Phillips and Illinois State families; his caregivers, Bobbie and Rosalyn; and many other relatives and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Fred Richard Hunter Jr. and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Fred Hunter Jr. as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
