| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Dr. John Carl Bowling on |
| 4 | | the occasion of his retirement as president of Olivet Nazarene |
| 5 | | University; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowling has been the president of Olivet |
| 7 | | Nazarene University since
1991; prior to becoming president, he |
| 8 | | served for
eight years as the senior pastor of the College |
| 9 | | Church of the Nazarene in Bourbonnais; he also served as senior |
| 10 | | pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Dallas,
Texas; he |
| 11 | | has been a member of the faculty at Nazarene Bible College in |
| 12 | | Colorado
Springs, Colorado and at Olivet Nazarene University; |
| 13 | | and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowling holds a Bachelor of Arts in Religion |
| 15 | | and a Master of Arts in Theology from Olivet Nazarene |
| 16 | | University, a Master of Religious Education and a Doctor of |
| 17 | | Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a
|
| 18 | | Doctor of Ministry from Southern Methodist University, and an |
| 19 | | honorary Doctor of
Divinity, which was conferred upon him by |
| 20 | | Olivet during its centennial celebration; he was also chosen as |
| 21 | | a Resident Fellow for post-doctoral studies at Harvard
|
| 22 | | University; and
|
|

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowling is active with a variety of |
| 2 | | professional
organizations and local community affairs, |
| 3 | | including membership on the board of
the People's Bank in |
| 4 | | Kankakee; he served for many years as vice chairman of the |
| 5 | | Riverside
Health System Board of Directors and for ten years as |
| 6 | | a member of the Board of Trustees
of Rush University Medical |
| 7 | | Center in Chicago; he has also served as a member of the
United |
| 8 | | Way board and the board of the Kankakee Valley Chamber of |
| 9 | | Commerce; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowling
is a former Chairman of the Board of |
| 11 | | Directors of the Nazarene
Publishing House in Kansas City, |
| 12 | | Missouri and a former member of the Church of the
Nazarene |
| 13 | | Foundation Board of Directors; he also served for 12 years as a |
| 14 | | member of the general board for the Church of the Nazarene, |
| 15 | | including eight years as president; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowling
was selected as Citizen of the Year by |
| 17 | | the Chamber of Commerce and is a recipient of the Community
|
| 18 | | Alliance Beacon Award; he was also selected for special |
| 19 | | community recognition as Samaritan of the Year; recently, he |
| 20 | | was awarded the CASE V Chief Executive Leadership Award; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowling is also an accomplished writer, having |
| 22 | | authored over 65 published articles and six books; therefore, |
| 23 | | be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 2 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 3 | | we congratulate Dr. John Carl Bowling on his retirement as |
| 4 | | president of Olivet Nazarene University, and we wish him the |
| 5 | | best in all his future endeavors; and be it further
|
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 7 | | presented to Dr. Bowling as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
