| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic will be | ||||||
| 3 | celebrating its fifth anniversary at the Clinic's annual Spring | ||||||
| 4 | Event on May 7, 2020; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, The Clinic was founded after the City of Highland | ||||||
| 6 | Park Human Services Task Force performed a needs assessment and | ||||||
| 7 | identified a lack of access to legal services in the city; its | ||||||
| 8 | purpose is to provide accessible,
quality pro-bono legal | ||||||
| 9 | services in the areas of immigration, domestic violence, and | ||||||
| 10 | housing to give those in need of access to justice the | ||||||
| 11 | opportunity to live productive and secure lives; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, The Clinic has experienced immense growth since | ||||||
| 13 | its inception; it served served 875 clients in 2019, compared | ||||||
| 14 | to the 84 it served in 2015; by the end of August in 2019, it | ||||||
| 15 | had already served more clients than it had in all of 2018; it | ||||||
| 16 | has expanded from serving two communities in 2015 to serving | ||||||
| 17 | ten communities throughout northern Cook County and southern | ||||||
| 18 | Lake County in 2019; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, By the end of September in 2019, the Clinic's | ||||||
| 20 | immigration practice had handled over 315 immigration matters, | ||||||
| 21 | compared to 290 in all of 2018; it continues to expand its | ||||||
| 22 | immigration partnerships by offering monthly off-site clinics | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | and hosting Know Your Rights presentations; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The Clinic recognizes domestic violence as a | ||||||
| 3 | critical health issue and, by the end of September in 2019, had | ||||||
| 4 | helped over 160 survivors; in October of 2019, it led a | ||||||
| 5 | Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign that included | ||||||
| 6 | partnering with municipalities and townships; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, The Clinic continues to protect housing rights by | ||||||
| 8 | helping tenants stay in their homes, acquire the return of | ||||||
| 9 | wrongfully withheld security deposits, and avoid wrongful | ||||||
| 10 | evictions; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Through its geographic expansion, fundraising | ||||||
| 12 | efforts, educational initiatives, and outreach and advocacy, | ||||||
| 13 | the Clinic continues to be a trusted legal resource for the | ||||||
| 14 | low-income communities in northern Cook County and southern | ||||||
| 15 | Lake County; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 17 | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 18 | we congratulate the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic on its | ||||||
| 19 | fifth anniversary and commend its continued efforts to provide | ||||||
| 20 | legal aid to those most in need; and be it further
| ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||

| 2 | expression of our esteem and
respect.
