HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Northwestern University's Dance Marathon is one 
3of the largest student-run
philanthropic groups in the world; 
4every year, fundraising begins in the fall, culminating in  an 
5over 1,000 student, 30-hour dance marathon in March; this 
6year's marathon will take place March 6 through March 8; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, Started in 1975, the Dance Marathon has raised 
8over 20 million dollars for over 30 unique beneficiaries 
9throughout its 46 year history; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, This year, the primary beneficiary  of the Dance 
11Marathon is  Children's Home & Aid, which is a nonprofit 
12dedicated to recovering neglected children's health, hope, and 
13faith in the people around them;  and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, The money raised from the Dance Marathon will 
15provide the children under Children's Home & Aid's care  with 
16counseling, expression therapy, and mentor programs, which 
17will eventually lead to a permanent home placement; this year, 
18the Marathon dancers will specifically work with the Daniel F. 
19and Ada L. Rice Child and Family Center, a foster shelter 
20located in Evanston; and
  
 
21    WHEREAS, The Evanston Community Foundation will be the

1secondary beneficiary of the Dance Marathon for the 
2twenty-third year in a row; the Evanston Community Foundation 
3works to strengthen Evanston and the surrounding communities by 
4awarding grants and endowment funds to deserving individuals, 
5families, and organizations with the goal of helping Evanston 
6thrive; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Dance Marathon not only raises money for 
8deserving causes but also gives  Northwestern students a college 
9community and teaches them the importance of philanthropy and 
10services as well as leadership and career skills; therefore, be 
11it
  
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE 
13HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
14we commend the Northwestern University Dance Marathon for their 
15annual months-long fundraising and charitable efforts; and be 
16it further
  
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
18presented to the Northwestern University Dance Marathon as a 
19symbol of our esteem and respect.
