| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Naperville North High |
| 4 | | School senior Alayna Nguyen for her role in winning the 2020 |
| 5 | | NASA & Texas Instruments Codes Contest; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The national contest asked middle and high school |
| 7 | | students to propose ways to automate or optimize a process or |
| 8 | | product for living in and working at the International Space |
| 9 | | Station and required students to use coding and Texas |
| 10 | | Instruments technology to design and build a model of their |
| 11 | | proposed solution; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Alayna Nguyen partnered with high school students |
| 13 | | from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania to create the |
| 14 | | competition's first-ever multi-state team, which they called |
| 15 | | the "Germaphobes"; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, This multi-state team created a free-flying robot |
| 17 | | that uses ultraviolet light for sterilizing the space station |
| 18 | | so astronauts could spend their time focusing on experiments; |
| 19 | | and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, The judges were impressed with the multi-state |
| 21 | | team's ability to overcome distance barriers and collaborate |
|

| 1 | | virtually to design and build their model; and
|
| 2 | | WHEREAS, After an initial judging round where projects were |
| 3 | | scrutinized by a panel of judges from NASA and Texas |
| 4 | | Instruments, the Germaphobes advanced to the final round, in |
| 5 | | which the public was invited to vote online for their favorite |
| 6 | | project; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, After more than 21,000 votes were cast, the |
| 8 | | Germaphobes' sterilization project received the most votes; |
| 9 | | and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Each of the grand champions will receive a Texas |
| 11 | | Instruments graphing calculator and a Texas Instruments' |
| 12 | | calculator-controlled robotic vehicle, the TI-Innovator Rover; |
| 13 | | and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Each champion also wins a free trip to the Johnson |
| 15 | | Space Center in Houston, Texas for a behind-the-scenes tour and |
| 16 | | an opportunity to present their design to the International |
| 17 | | Space Station Program Office personnel; therefore, be it
|
| 18 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 19 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
