| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Martin J. "Marty" Gleason, who passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on October 1, 2018; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Marty Gleason was an active participant in | ||||||
| 6 | Illinois Democratic politics for more than five decades; a 1955 | ||||||
| 7 | graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he served as the | ||||||
| 8 | Precinct Committeeman for Precinct 35 in Burr Ridge and, until | ||||||
| 9 | his death, was an active volunteer for Bill Foster; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Marty Gleason served on the delegation to the | ||||||
| 11 | Democratic National Committee in 1964 and again in 1972; he | ||||||
| 12 | also served as State Central Committeeman and actively | ||||||
| 13 | supported the Senate's campaigns for Adlai Stevenson, Paul | ||||||
| 14 | Douglas, and Paul Simon; in addition to serving in these roles, | ||||||
| 15 | he also ran for State Senate and for Congress; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, In 1968, Marty Gleason served as the Deputy Floor | ||||||
| 17 | Manager for Eugene McCarthy at the Democratic National | ||||||
| 18 | Convention in Chicago; a 2008 article for the Daily Herald | ||||||
| 19 | noted, "with convention experiences running the gamut from | ||||||
| 20 | rubbing shoulders with celebrities Paul Newman and Joanne | ||||||
| 21 | Woodward to bailing McCarthy volunteers out of jail at one in | ||||||
| 22 | the morning, Gleason summed it up as 'like rolling over Niagara | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | Falls in a barrel'"; in Arthur Herzog III's book on the | ||||||
| 2 | McCarthy campaign, Gleason recounted that Stephen A. Mitchell | ||||||
| 3 | drafted him for the role because he had the reputation of being | ||||||
| 4 | a "political alley fighter"; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Marty Gleason was a true pioneer for the | ||||||
| 6 | Democratic Party; he was at the forefront of many changes in | ||||||
| 7 | the political landscape in DuPage and Will Counties, as well as | ||||||
| 8 | the State of Illinois; he was always willing to accept the | ||||||
| 9 | challenges that needed his energy and experience and worked for | ||||||
| 10 | the good of the cause; and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Marty Gleason was the husband of Nancy Sweeney | ||||||
| 12 | (Voris) Gleason, the father of Lisa (Jim) Sattler and Cara | ||||||
| 13 | Guzman, the stepfather of John Sweeney, Colleen (Warren) | ||||||
| 14 | Jablonsky, Kevin (Shawn) Sweeney, Tim (Tracy) Sweeney, and | ||||||
| 15 | Peter Sweeney, the grandfather of 16, and the great-grandfather | ||||||
| 16 | of 12; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
| 18 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 19 | Martin J. "Marty" Gleason and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
| 20 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
| 21 | further

| 22 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
