SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of James P. "Jim" Warfield of Urbana, who
4passed away on January 14, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was born in Granite City to Vivian
6and Eldon Warfield; he attended the University of Illinois
7Urbana-Champaign, where he received many awards, including the
8Bronze Tablet; in 1963, during his junior year, he spent a
9summer in Chiapas, Mexico with Harvard Professor Evon Z. Vogt
10and studied local architecture; his writings and drawings from
11that summer became a chapter in Vogt's book, Zinacantan and in
12a Spanish book published by the Mexican government called Los
13Zinacantecos; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield married Rochelle "Chelle" Wilson in
151964; in the late 1960s, he and Chelle served in the United
16States Peace Corps in Bolivia, South America; he excelled in
17his first teaching position at the University of San Andres in
18La Paz, Bolivia during that time, and the experience led to his
19choice to teach when he returned to the United States; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was an architect and professor of
21architectural design at the school of Architecture, University
22of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he taught architectural

1design and a chancellor's scholars course; he frequently led
2study-abroad trips to Mexico, Turkey, and Greece; his first
3trip to Shanghai, China established a summer program between
4Tongji University's architecture program and the architecture
5students at UIUC; he spent nine summers in China with students;
6in 2012, he was appointed advising professor of architecture at
7Tongji University, and he served in that position until his
8death; in 2013, he was appointed to the board of directors for
9several Chinese publications; in 2003, he was named professor
10emeritus at UIUC, and, even though he retired in 2003, he
11continued teaching through 2018; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was awarded the prestigious Francis
13J. Plym Traveling Fellowship in 1971; he received the American
14Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Distinguished
15Professor Award in 1997; as a professor at UIUC, he was
16recognized 53 times on the "List of Teachers Ranked as
17Excellent by Their Students"; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield's interest in vernacular
19architecture led to extensive world travel with his wife; he
20was an excellent photographer, and his photographs were
21exhibited on the UIUC campus and in Chicago, Scotland, Turkey,
22and China; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was the author of seven books and

1many articles published in Chinese journals; in 2013, the
2Warfield Vernacular Architecture Archives were included as
3party of the library collection at Tongji University; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was preceded in death by his parents
5and his daughter, Anna Martina McQuillan; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jim Warfield is survived by his wife, Chelle; his
7children, Joseph Glennon Warfield, Mark Alan Warfield, and
8Christina Lee Fisher; his grandchildren, Brandon McQuillan,
9Gabriella Fisher, Ian Fisher, Sarah Warfield, Elisabeth
10Warfield, Peter Warfield, and Connor Fisher; and his brothers,
11Walter Harold Warfield and Eldon William Warfield; therefore,
12be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
15James P. "Jim" Warfield and extend our sincere condolences to
16his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the family of Jim Warfield as an expression of our
20deepest sympathy.
