SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of James P. "Jim" Warfield of Urbana, who passed away on January 14, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was born in Granite City to Vivian and Eldon Warfield; he attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he received many awards, including the Bronze Tablet; in 1963, during his junior year, he spent a summer in Chiapas, Mexico with Harvard Professor Evon Z. Vogt and studied local architecture; his writings and drawings from that summer became a chapter in Vogt's book, Zinacantan and in a Spanish book published by the Mexican government called Los Zinacantecos; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield married Rochelle "Chelle" Wilson in 1964; in the late 1960s, he and Chelle served in the United States Peace Corps in Bolivia, South America; he excelled in his first teaching position at the University of San Andres in La Paz, Bolivia during that time, and the experience led to his choice to teach when he returned to the United States; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was an architect and professor of architectural design at the school of Architecture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; he taught architectural design and a chancellor's scholars course; he frequently led study-abroad trips to Mexico, Turkey, and Greece; his first trip to Shanghai, China established a summer program between Tongji University's architecture program and the architecture students at UIUC; he spent nine summers in China with students; in 2012, he was appointed advising professor of architecture at Tongji University, and he served in that position until his death; in 2013, he was appointed to the board of directors for several Chinese publications; in 2003, he was named professor emeritus at UIUC, and, even though he retired in 2003, he continued teaching through 2018; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was awarded the prestigious Francis J. Plym Traveling Fellowship in 1971; he received the American Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Distinguished Professor Award in 1997; as a professor at UIUC, he was recognized 53 times on the "List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students"; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield's interest in vernacular architecture led to extensive world travel with his wife; he was an excellent photographer, and his photographs were exhibited on the UIUC campus and in Chicago, Scotland, Turkey, and China; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was the author of seven books and many articles published in Chinese journals; in 2013, the Warfield Vernacular Architecture Archives were included as party of the library collection at Tongji University; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Anna Martina McQuillan; and

WHEREAS, Jim Warfield is survived by his wife, Chelle; his children, Joseph Glennon Warfield, Mark Alan Warfield, and Christina Lee Fisher; his grandchildren, Brandon McQuillan, Gabriella Fisher, Ian Fisher, Sarah Warfield, Elisabeth Warfield, Peter Warfield, and Connor Fisher; and his brothers, Walter Harold Warfield and Eldon William Warfield; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of James P. "Jim" Warfield and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Jim Warfield as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
