SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes the need for clean waterways, whether a large or small body of water, whether rural, urban, or suburban in location, for public safety, for public recreation, for economic benefit, and for historical character; and

WHEREAS, The third Saturday of September is recognized globally as "International Coastal Cleanup Day" and is coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy and promoted by various like-minded Illinois partner organizations; and

WHEREAS, The coalition of Illinois Global Scholar stakeholders, acting for the benefit of students in Illinois and working to promote Public Act 099-0780, are partnering with organizations to ensure the protection, restoration, and health of Illinois waterways; and

WHEREAS, Service learning promotes effective student growth opportunities, and a statewide coordinated week of action will facilitate active citizen engagement, with a focus on active student engagement in learning and effective environmental improvement through trash collection, data collection, and data analysis; and

WHEREAS, To coordinate with the International Coastal Cleanup Day effort, partner organizations and schools across Illinois will facilitate the opportunity for student participant groups in the State to partner with other student participant groups in different countries, providing students in Illinois with the opportunity to communicate and collaborate globally and discuss and share their efforts and findings; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare the calendar week containing the third Saturday of September 2019 as Illinois Waterway Cleanup Week in the State of Illinois.
