SENATE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to 
3learn of the death of Daniel W. "Dan" Shaffer of Moline, who 
4passed away on March 8, 2019; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Dan Shaffer was born in Moline to Charles and 
6Helen (Olson) Shaffer on February 3, 1942; he graduated from 
7Moline High School in 1960; he served in the United States Air 
8Force from 1960 until 1964; he married Shirley Ann Erwin in 
9Moline on April 16, 1966; she preceded him in death; he married 
10Susan VanOverberg in Geneseo on July 14, 2007; and
  
 
11    WHEREAS, Dan Shaffer worked for the United States 
12Government and retired in 1993; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Dan Shaffer was a member of Scared Heart Church in 
14Moline and St. Malachy's Church in Geneseo; as a child, he 
15spent many years at a fishing resort in northern Wisconsin and, 
16later, at a fishing resort in Bagley, Wisconsin, where he and 
17Shirley Ann owned a trailer next to his parents; he was a 
18member of Cushman Club of America and traveled all over the 
19United States for scooter meets; his favorite ride was the 
20Indianapolis Motor Speedway; he was highly-skilled with a 
21scroll saw and made puzzles for family and friends; the past 
22few years, he was learning the art of woodcarving; and

1    WHEREAS, Dan Shaffer was preceded in death by his parents; 
2his sister, Darci Pinedo; his grandson, Nolan Smith; and his 
3niece, Emma Pinedo; and
  
 
4    WHEREAS, Dan Shaffer is survived by his wife, Susan; his 
5daughter, Jennifer Cattanach; his son, James (Randi) Shaffer; 
6his grandchildren, Bryce Smith, Hannah Cattanach, and Ashley 
7and Sophie Shaffer; his stepsons, David Benhart, Scott 
8(Suzanne) Benhart, and Matthew (Melissa) Benhart; his 
9stepgranddaughters, Alynna Rowan, Angela Rowan and Angela and 
10Michelle Benhart; his nephew, Charlie Pinedo; and his cousins, 
11Sharon Shaffer, Martin Shaffer, and Margo (Dave) Georlett; 
12therefore, be it
  
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL 
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of 
15Daniel W. "Dan" Shaffer and extend our sincere condolences to 
16his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it 
17further
  
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
19presented to the family of Dan Shaffer as an expression of our 
20deepest sympathy.
