2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death Mary J. Hunt, who passed away on August 22, |
4 | | 2018 at the age of 103; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt was born on August 6, 1915 to Margaret |
6 | | and Chester Johnson; she grew up on Forest Avenue in Oak Park, |
7 | | just two blocks from the home of her grandparents, Mary and |
8 | | Henry Hamilton, who served as Oak Park Village President from |
9 | | 1907 to 1909; she spent many summers during her youth with her |
10 | | extended family at the Hamilton summer home, "Glen Carrie", in |
11 | | Twin Lakes, Wisconsin; she had fond memories of trips to Maine |
12 | | to visit her relatives, where she learned to ride a bicycle |
13 | | along a dirt path on her family's farm; and
|
14 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt graduated from Oak Park and River Forest |
15 | | High School in 1933 and from Stanford University in 1937, where |
16 | | she majored in English; and
|
17 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt married Lawrence "Laurie" H. Hunt in |
18 | | 1941 at her parents' home in Oak Park; the couple moved near |
19 | | Washington D.C. due to her husband's service in the U.S. Navy |
20 | | during World War II; after the war, they became residents of |
21 | | River Forest, where they raised a family of seven children; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt attended events and kept up with world |
2 | | affairs while a member of the Chicago Council of Foreign |
3 | | Relations (currently CC of Global Affairs); she was active in |
4 | | her community and volunteered as a member of Circle 25 of the |
5 | | Infant Welfare Society; she was a lifelong member of First |
6 | | United Church of Oak Park; and |
7 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt loved to travel and enjoyed trips to |
8 | | England and Europe with her college friends and her family; she |
9 | | relished summer trips to northern Michigan with her family, and |
10 | | in retirement, she and Laurie spent time in Carefree, Arizona; |
11 | | and |
12 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt enjoyed the many cultural offerings of |
13 | | Chicago and regularly attended performances of the Chicago |
14 | | Symphony Orchestra and events at the Art Institute with her |
15 | | husband; she and Laurie enjoyed gardening and landscaping; |
16 | | together they maintained a beautiful large yard used for |
17 | | hosting summer gatherings and winter ice skating for the |
18 | | enjoyment of the neighborhood children; Mary enjoyed playing |
19 | | tennis and golf and was a member of the River Forest Tennis |
20 | | Club since 1942 and the Oak Park Country Club; she played the |
21 | | piano and loved to read, fostering her children's interests in |
22 | | music and learning; memories of her sense of adventure, humor, |
23 | | style, and spirit are cherished by her family and friends; and |

1 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt came from a family with a history of |
2 | | accomplishments; her maternal ancestors were among the early |
3 | | settlers in Chicago; her great-great-grandfather, Richard J. |
4 | | Hamilton, was a lawyer and judge and established the first |
5 | | public school in Chicago in 1832; her grandfather, Henry R. |
6 | | Hamilton, authored "The Epic of Chicago" in 1932, detailing the |
7 | | early history of the city; generations of Mary's paternal |
8 | | ancestors lived in Maine since pre-Revolutionary days; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt was preceded in death by her husband, |
10 | | Lawrence Halley Hunt; her children, Lawrence Jr. (the late |
11 | | Katherine) and Douglas (Holly); and her brother, Hamilton (the |
12 | | late Jane) Johnson; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Mary Hunt is survived by her children, Thomas |
14 | | (Laurie), Margaret Campbell, David, Elizabeth (Francis), and |
15 | | James
(Christie); her grandchildren, Christopher, Caroline
|
16 | | (Jon), Laura (Jordan), Darwin (Lindsey), Brian, David, James, |
17 | | Katherine, Thomas, Katelyn, and Anne; six great-grandchildren;
|
18 | | and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be |
19 | | it

20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
22 | | Mary J. Hunt, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, |
23 | | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
