2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Herbert Curlee Harris D.D.S., who passed | ||||||
4 | away on March 29, 2019; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Harris was born in Tucker, Arkansas to Lillie | ||||||
6 | Maud Tucker Harris and Emanuel Mason
Harris on February 4, | ||||||
7 | 1928; he attended Arkansas AM&N College (University of Arkansas | ||||||
8 | at Pine Bluff) and served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the | ||||||
9 | Korean War; he continued his studies at Meharry Medical
College | ||||||
10 | in Nashville, Tennessee, where he earned a Doctorate of Dental | ||||||
11 | Surgery in 1959; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Harris completed an internship in oral surgery | ||||||
13 | at Harlem Hospital
in New York City and received his | ||||||
14 | professional diploma in 1960; he earned
a Master of Public | ||||||
15 | Health in 1976 from the University of Illinois at Chicago; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Harris operated a successful dental practice | ||||||
17 | in Chicago for over 30 years; he was
also the proprietor of the | ||||||
18 | Chatham Avalon Health Center, one of
the largest Black-owned | ||||||
19 | medical centers in Chicago; he made real estate investments in
| ||||||
20 | Chicago and Freeport, Bahamas; he was the founder and CEO of | ||||||
21 | the former Daniel Hale
Williams Health Center and president of | ||||||
22 | the Lincoln Dental Society; he was on the board of trustees
and |

| |||||||
1 | president of the National Alumni Association for Meharry | ||||||
2 | Medical College; and
| ||||||
3 | WHEREAS, Dr. Harris was a lifetime member of the National | ||||||
4 | NAACP; he was listed in Who's Who in America and
received the | ||||||
5 | University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UNPB) Legacy Award in | ||||||
6 | 2017; he has received numerous honors and awards over the years
| ||||||
7 | for his generous contributions of both time and money to his | ||||||
8 | undergraduate alma mater, UAPB,
Meharry Medical College, and to | ||||||
9 | the Chicagoland community at large; and | ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Dr. Harris's memberships included the Alpha Phi | ||||||
11 | Alpha Fraternity, the Lambs Club, the Original
Forty Club, The | ||||||
12 | National Dental Association, and The American Public Health | ||||||
13 | Association; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Dr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents; | ||||||
15 | and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Harris is survived by his wife of 60 years, | ||||||
17 | Mildred, and numerous nieces, nephews, family members,
and | ||||||
18 | friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Herbert Curlee Harris D.D.S. and extend our sincere condolences |

1 | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
2 | it further
| ||||||
3 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
4 | presented to the family of Dr. Harris as an expression of our | ||||||
